Are media stories about deportations and "closure of borders" etc really just a ruse?

Does the UK really have control over its borders?

Do we actually have any control here in the UK?

Who is actually in control here?

You should do some research and focus on what you mean by control of borders.

There are two aspects.
1. Legal control, that is does the UK have laws relating to who can and cant come into the country.
- Yes because parliament can decide what it likes, but the UK is still part of free movement for the EU until the end of the year, so its mostly non EU controls. Also EU is bound by international agreements relating toi asylum seekers.

2. Physical control, that is does it have the personnel to enforce the rules and prevent unauthorised entry into the UK. - it has some but not enough to prevent illegal entry via the coastline.

If the uk wants to stop people coming in legally or physically it can do.

Currently it is slowly getting its act together

There have been steady cuts to the number of people involved in protecting the borders under successive governments, so the overall capability of the UK to stop people illegally entering is probably lower than it was 30 or 50 years ago. There have been improvements in technology that mean fewer people are needed, but it's likely that our coastlines in particular are much less well guarded than they used to be, as can be seen by the fact that many small places on the coasts that used to have customs officers now don't.

The UK doesn't use data from the EU very well in terms of blocking people who have criminal backgrounds. This is still true under the current Tory government, despite years of blather, hype and lies on the subject. It is completely easy for EU citizens to be deported for crimes here and then re-enter shortly afterwards.

On the one hand we government PR and spin which claims to be getting control of the borders. On the other, we have ongoing reality, which is poor control.
