It's interesting from a consumer behaviour and psychological point of view. But yes - they're essentially morons.

It’s the hoarders mentality.

Some folks worry that they’ll have no tissue paper if there’s a quarantine imposed. They rush to buy toilet paper. Others see them go nuts, so they rush to buy in case the stores run out. Media shows clips of empty aisles and shoppers going apes hit, cue pandemonium...

Ite same at Christmas you see some people buying enough to last two months when the shops are only closed two days.
In the 1970s there was a toilet paper shortage .. caused by a warehouse for the biggest supplier in the UK spreading rumours in the media about it being in short supply...
.... people then, like now, panicked and stockpiled it.
The shops run out because the warehouse staff were not releasing supplies.
The shopkeepers put the prices up of the supply they had and the warehouse staff put the price up to supply the shops ... until it reached a level they were happy with then started supplying more to the shops..
.... the reason was the warehouse staff at the time got paid a bonus according to profits

It's very annoying when people stock pile stuff like this, all they are doing is actually causing a shortage

The media seems to enjoy fuelling the panic in people.
There are currently 163 cases in the UK with 2 deaths out of a population of around 66M
.. ordinary flue kills around 40,000 people a year in the UK

Our politicians rely on a good percentage of the population being morons.
