NUS and ID

(not sure which forum this goes into...)
I don't have a provisional or real driving license and don't really fancy carrying my passport around with me, I was just wondering if an NUS student card counts as valid ID for clubs and pubs etc?? If not, what others forms of ID are there, don't really fancy forking out 50 quid for a provisional and don't want to learn how to drive just yet!! photocopies of passports don't tend to be accepted, thankies

The NUS student card you get from uni's dont tend to be excepted anywhere apart from student unions (unless you're just showing it for student discounts or something). And the other NUS card is a load of crap i've found. Provisional is your best bet 'm afraid

Student cards don't, generally, have your DoB on - that makeds them pretty useless as proof of age.

it has my date of birth and photograph on it...whats wrong with it?

There's no such thing as 'valid ID' for a pub or nightclub - they'll let you or refuse you based on what they fancy.

If you have problems, I'd get a provisional licence: you'll have to buy one eventually anyway.

Arsey police guidelines recommending that doorstaff don't accept them, basically. No real reason behind it, just a ridiculous knee-jerk response to underage drinking.

I use my NUS card but I know most places don't accept it, and usually when they do let me use it they say "make sure you bring your driving licence or passport next time".

I think you'll have to invest in a provisional to be honest.

on the contrary i've used my NUS card for buying drink and getting into clubs in england and ireland.

I may have accidentally put my age up by a year on it at the time

You can get a Citizen Card for a fiver and that should be accepted anywhere.

I have one, it's good

Yess you can easily fake your age on a NUS card, so this is why they dont tend to actually accept them as ID

Reply 10

They wont accept your NUS, unless theyre really dead, in which case they'll let you in.

Reply 11

Probably not worth the risk as many places wont accept them as the DOB can be easily forged.

Might as well get a provisional as you will eventually need one if you choose to learn to drive

Because i've got one which says i'm 18, and im turning 17 in a few weeks. Basically, NUS don't check your age when you apply.

I know someone who got his NUS card back with his DOB as 03/09/58

This should be accepted everywhere -- if I'd known about it, I'd have got one ages ago instead of a provisional driving license and saved myself £££.

Provisional is best. In Reading they generally don't accept anything apart from a driving license or passport, which doesn't include the citizen card. Some places even have posters outside stating driving license or passport only. However you may find that a citizencard works where you are. I would go and ask in a couple of clubs/pubs and see if the citizencard is valid and if it is then go with that as its far cheaper. If not then a provisional is good although there are a couple of places that I have seen that state only a full driving license is accepted i.e. no provisionals

Which is why most places here don't accept it. Because there are people out there like you who will be dishonest about using it as proof of age. In Ireland I've had to produce passport/driving licence too, even my computer printed ISIC is not sufficient.

Clubs and higher-class bars tend to be arsey about those things as well, a friend of mine had one and the waiter was always taking it away for their manager to check, I'd imagine a club doorman would just turn her away.

ID needs to have a PHOTO and DATE OF BIRTH.

That's all that matters.

Generally, retailers and doormen will only accept identification in the form of a Passport or a card with a PASS hologram on it. Though, the citizen card thing is generally discarded by most doormen and you'll more than likely end up disappointed. A provisional driving licence is just over £20 and will be accepted in probably 99% of pubs, bars and clubs.

I'll tell you for a fact, you'd not get in to anywhere but the dodgiest backstreet dive with a citizen card, where I live. It's passport or driving licence ONLY.

I always take my passport and will never use a provisional as ID. I really dont want any clubs or bars to have access to my personal details by scanning in a license on the door (As so many are starting to do now).
