Hello, I have absolutely no realy friends at uni and I’m really depressed I think my mental health gets in the way of me making friends!

I have lost my friends at home because me and my boyfriend had the same friends and now we are not together, they all see each other because they live at home.

I miss my friends at home sooo much as well as my boyfriend and now I have no one at uni to help me feel okay, I have no idea what to do, I don’t even really like being at uni but I don’t want to have no friends and feel like uni is my last chance to make friends!

Anyone understand that may be able to help me figure it out?

If you feel your mental health inhibits you then you should try and deal with and overcome this first, do you see anyone about this? However not having friends, being and feeling isolated and lonely can also make your mental health worse, so regardless of how bad you are feeling (ik how **** it can make you feel), so you should try and sort this out at the same time.

Sorry you are no longer with your bf, are you not able to keep in contact with your mutual friends despite not seeing them? Why have you not got any proper friends at uni? I hope you find the strength and motivation to stick with uni, and even if you don't find friends at uni this doesn't mean you'll never have friends in the future, at all

I have no friends at all, never had. Try having autism, suffering from chronic loneliness and being bullied for both of those things.

Hi there fellow Bournemouth-Person
Have you tried getting involved with the ResLife program - they are a great bunch of guys and are really good at helping people meet each other and make new friends. Have you heard about them?

Hey, have you reached out to any of the support services (applies to other students at other uni's too), specifically the health and wellbeing teams.

How about any of the clubs and societies? You could find something that has group of like minded people. How about volunteering somewhere? Local soup kitchen/food bank/beach cleans? Do you do much in the way of exercise?

With regards to mental health, I would really recommend speaking with a GP but the wellbeing team could always signpost you further.

Best wishes to everyone struggling. Uni can be really tough, especially if you feel you don't fit in straight away. Look after yourselves and ask for help, there are 100% friends out there for you but they may well be hiding too.

Hey!

It can be really hard to try and find new friends, especially when you were close with a particular group for so long. If it makes you feel any better, when I moved to Bournemouth to attend Bournemouth University, I knew no one. I left all my home friends behind and as the years went on, me and my home friends slowly drifted apart which is natural and ok. Now I am in my third year at uni and I have more friends in Bournemouth then I did at home in the first place. Things do turn around, but it can take time. In first year, I isolated myself a lot and therefore prevented myself from making new friends. Then in second and third year, I became more confident in my surroundings and started to socialise a lot more!

Try and see if there is a society that you are interested in joining at uni because that is always a great way to make new friends. If you are nervous about doing this then try and message the founder of the society saying that you are interested in joining but you're a bit nervous. Then perhaps you could meet up with them first before meeting the whole society. It's all about pushing yourself but you can push yourself with baby steps!

Hope this helps!
