I’m in first year of a level and have got my progression exams in 6 weeks. I do law geography and sociology and am currently only copying out the text books. Is this effective and what else can I do?

copying isn't that effective if you don't know or don't understand the information
a more effective way would be completing past paper questions for your subjects or creating flashcards/study cards with questions on one side and answers on the other, definitions you need to know for the exam

What about writing out questions and answering them in my head

no, copying out the textbook won't be much help at all. condense information down when you're making notes. note taking is not enough, you need to be regularly testing your knowledge through flashcards, past paper questions etc.
