We have been together 1.5 years, always thought we were soulmates etc, went through a rough patch lasting a few months where we nearly broke up. However we worked through our issues and are still together, even better than we were before. We are planning to get engaged soon. Do we sound like a strong couple?

Can't say. Your description of your relationship is very generic.

no marriage/relationship is without its troubles and problems, however much they try to portray to others something otherwise, the fact that you were able to overcome this together and still going strong is a for sure positive sign, rather than something later down the line Best of luck for your future together
