AS Mechanics Pulleys

When teachers go through pulleys questions I understand it, however when faced with a question myself I can't get very far and its often guess work to work out tension, acceleration etc.
Any advice on how to understand pulleys properly?

first you need to find out the direction of motion and set that direction to be +ve, then make a diagram of all the forces acting on particles then resolve forces in the direction each particle moves . its easy you will get it with a little bit of practice.
