Have you checked you can use the Odyssey?
Have an ask on good reads about any good books that involve a journey or discovery. I was going to say the Road, but Cormack McCarthy is American.

You probabvly need a better contrast as well as it being more modern.

I don’t know how well it would work as a comparison, but the penelopiad by Margaret Atwood is a retelling of the odyssey that tells the events from Penelope’s perspective. I did a module last year which involved looking at modern versions of the odyssey and other similar texts.
