Year 12s & 13s: How is coronavirus impacting your uni choices/applications?

Poll

Which of these would you use to find out more about a uni?

And what could universities do to help?

Open days and UCAS fairs are being called off, many open days are being postponed - is this affecting you in researching university choices? Are you worried on missing out on information by not being able to go to these....?

What would be useful?

- Virtual online tours/open days?
- Webinars?
- Live streaming events?
- More Guest Lecture content or AMAs on TSR?

Wondering how you guys are feeling :grouphugs: It might be helpful to get some thoughts together here.

I was planning on going to an Applicant Visiting Days on Saturday 28th at Aberystwyth, just got cancelled yesterday as well as the day the week before due to the coronavirus, but luckily I seen the virtual tours and it's my firm unconditional choice so I'm happy, there is an online open day at the start of May, there are live chat sessions every Wednesday as well so I've got that if I need it.

Congrats on your firm unconditional!

Live chats sound helpful :h:
A visual tour would be good and if we were given an opportunity to speak with current students doing the course we applied for. My offer holders day so cancelled so now I have no idea who to firm as my information about the uni is limited so I can't make a decision that is as important as picking a uni to spend 4 years of my life in.

Ah sorry to hear they've been cancelled - which unis have you applued to? You still have until 5th May to make a choice so still plenty of time.

Durham, I also paid for the very expensive train ticket but it is non refundable so thats my money wasted. Really annoyed about that.

Most universities already have virtual tours/open days. UCAS has a list here: https://www.ucas.com/undergraduate/what-and-where-study/open-days-and-events/virtual-tours

(although some are a bit dated and there's better content on their website).

Have you contacted them (with a copy of the receipt) asking if there's anyway they can reimburse you?

No would they do you think?

No harm in asking

I was going to attend offer holder days to chose between universities as my insurance choice, but as they are at the end of this month / beginning of next month, I decided to just choose without going as up the events will almost certainly be cancelled. I’m also worried that my exams will be disrupted and I won’t meet my offer conditions for my first choice uni I really want to go to.

I didn't think of this, but TSR could be VERY useful in this sense. Has TSR thought of reaching out to unis?
does anyone here think that applications for year 12s will be postponed, since we wont have mocks due to corona will we have extra time to change our predicted grades and apply a few months later?
i've been trying to pick between two unis for my firm. i had one offer holder day last week but the other uni's one has been cancelled. i'm not really sure what to do now as i feel like it's hard to make an informed decision without having visiting the place and getting the feel of it. i'm not sure there's much the unis can do though, i've tried virtual open days before but they feel very fake/staged compared to going to an actual open day:dontknow:

I know that my uni (Edinburgh) has said it intends to replace its offer holder day with some sort of online alternative. Hopefully this will be helpful and other unis will do the same.
I've applied, but who knows how this is going to affect us all getting in and how many spaces they can allocate :frown:
I'm worried, had a ucas fair was supposed to go to,. all open days i wanted to go to cancelled.

More worried about the fact that we will miss so much this year and this will effect our final results.

You can order a lot of prospectuses online. Go nuts and order a whole bunch - you can use them as toilet paper in an emergency!

Hi!
My name is Gosia and I am working for Cardiff University's Marketing Team.
With everything that's going on at the moment, we are trying to come up with some alternatives to our Open Day events, but we need your help.
I'd really like to know what types of information you would benefit from most, which institutions are doing the best job coming up with alternatives, and what was your best virtual experience so far?
