Son completing Avionic apprenticeship in June 2020 and just been told going to Odiham, but not whether he's on squadron or bay. He want to continue his education as was one of top in his class, but is worried Bay will hold him back and now considering leaving. Advice please!

Is your son completing his apprenticeship in June as he's coming to the end of his first tour, or completing his Avionics training course? If the latter, he'll get his apprenticeship technical certificate on successful completion, but still has the competence part to do during his first tour, so is continuing his education.

He can express a preference for posting, but he will go where the Service need him. It won't hold him back being in the bay; plenty of people do this role and move on in their careers. He will receve whatever on-the-job training is required and can undertake other studies. Plus promotion is also based on his demonstrating he can take on other resposibilities, so he needs to be getting involved in activities on and off station.

All this will have been explained to your son, and either he's not explained it properly to you, is being a bit selective or needs to refresh himself on how the system works. It would be better if your son could come on here and explain his situation as there are ex-military personnel (like me) on here. Either that, or he speaks with his supervisors, but he needs to be clear in his mind exactly what his issues are before entering into a discussion. Or is there something unrelated bothering him? He should remember that being on a station and doing the job is a very different environment to training and he's going to a busy unit at Odiham.

Happy to discuss this with you further, but it might prove a bit awkward when you're the messenger and might have a bit of to-ing and fro-ing to establish what's going on.
