New emergency powers will last two years and permit arbitrary arrest and detentionWatch
The government emergency powers as proposed will last for two years without further Parliamentary review or discussion.
They are intending to pass the powers without a vote. The powers will give the government the right to detain any person suspected of having the virus (which means basically anyone) and take them to unspecified locations for 'screening and assessment'. Sounds a lot like dictatorship powers.
I'm sure the government don't intend to use these powers in any context other than Coronavirus, but really, what's to stop them extending them later to political dissent or even anyone slightly critical? Probably not much.
Its the updated version of the DORA provisions combined with 18B & Demetrius to handle national defence and public safety from a contagious super-virus.
