I hope you're not suggesting that Southampton is an ex-poly.
Uh, no, I wasn't. And if I was, why should it matter? I'm not some deluded middle class snob that doesn't want the underclass to be educated or some rubbish, and I am offended that you would accuse me of being one.

Maybe I am a snob, but 'modern university' has connotations of 'new university'.
I remember when it was unis and polys. the best of the polys were as good the average uni. Some specialist courses could only be done at polys. The then worst unis were not as good as the best polys but had prestige. BTW I went to uni.
Ok, to straighten things up, I don't believe Southampton is terrible... but it is certainly not an elite uni; which I thought contrasted this idiot's elitist class delusions about proletariats.
Southampton's a great uni! Especially for sciences, got a good medical school. originalname is off to Imperial therefore it's in his nature to talk other universities down. Sorry mate but you know its true
Originalname seems to think that Southampton is a 'terrible university'. What does the rest of TSR think?
Are you asking because you want re-assurance or because you as seriously thinking of moving? (As far as I am concerned Southampton is half decent. But then I applied to Southampton both for Economics and Maths, So maybe I am biased.)
Originalname is a fool is what I think. Southhampton is a great university. Sure its not "elite" but it cannot be described as terrible. Terrible is what you use to describe Thames Valley or UCLAN.
Southampton is awesome. especially for engineering. especially for electrical and electronic engineering. the campus is AWESOME. best campus uni ive seen. reminds me of a typical american campus uni but better .
It's a great university. Unfortunately I had to deal with some really below standard inter-departmental communication and a geology department who had absolutely zero faith in my standards so I am a little bitter towards it, though...
You get that in the very best universities as well as the very worst. In fact, you just generally get that everywhere these days...
Agh, really ? I feel sorry for all the people that have to. What I applied for was a foundation year run by one dept. which would lead me to a course run by another dept. and the 'course' dept really didn't even know I existed so I couldn't appeal to skip the foundation year.
Do you have any anecdotes about that? I'm actually quite interested to hear how others have had to deal with it!

Nothing specific, sorry to dissapoint, but it's just something you get everywhere these days. Everyone's organisational skills seems to have gone to pot and no one communicates.
Take Durham for example. Some of its departments are very well organised. Some aren't. The politics department changing tutorial rooms at the last moment, the admin staff not communicating with tutors and lecturers. er The main student admin isn't much better, messing up my tutition fee assesment one year (I still got off with only paying £1 instead of the full amount I should have done). A couple of problems still not sorted out after a year (as they can't read emails properly). Then again the philosophy department couldn't be better organised.
But you get it elsewhere in life also. Like when I needed to make a simple enquiry to my local council and was put through about ten different departments (no one had a clue what they were talking about), cut off while being transferred, transferred to the wrong offices....
You get it everywhere, don't be so hard on Southampton.
