What's are the letting prices like in Bristol? I'm taking the Uni's accommodation for the first year, but I will factor in the cost of renting a place with some friends after first year before I firm a uni.

Ah it depends what you're looking for and how lucky you get I guess.

In my second year I was paying 416ppm for a 7 person house in Hotwells (bottom of hill, 20-30 min walk to uni and 15-20 min walk to city centre). In my third year I paid 425ppm for a 2 person flat in Clifton right across the SU (10 min walk to uni, 15-20 walk to city centre + Clifton is absolutely gorgeous). But for both years the rooms were on the small side, furniture and utilities provided were questionable.

If you wanted to live at a nicer (ie fancier) place prices would probably be around 500ish for around Redland/Clifton area (15-20 min walk to uni). But also if you wanted to cut costs even further you could live further away from uni and pay even less, but I wouldn't think that under 350ppm is realistic (I might be wrong).

Does this also include bills?
Because in that case, why is uni-owned accommodation so much more expensive that private

No it doesn't but I don't know how much we paid for bills. And also most (if not all) rent contracts are for 12 months compared to hall accommodations which are usually 9 months I think..
