The Student Room Group

lol I went there about a year or so ago, i'd say it's pretty good but also depends on what subjects you intend to take.

Also making friends might seem tough at first if you're outside the whole sacred heart/salvatorian high school clique, but everyone gels together by christmas.

If you do go there, during your time you'll probably complain that there's not much to do in free time (no common room, the principals have been arguing against this for yonks, lol) and cos it's on a hill it takes you ages to get around due to the H17 being delayed despite only coming once every twenty minutes..

But you will miss your first year when you have A2's and half the college drops out, my first year was so much fun. The second year is much more work!

I applied there, but didn't get in. I heard [from people who go there] about the lack of a common room, I also heard that the teachers generally don't tend to "teach" you in class, they expect you to go away and learn everything yourself. Is this true dicie?

Also, if your not Catholic, you need to be predicted 7 A*'s at GCSE to have a chance of getting in, as I found out.

My psychology teacher went to this college and she said it was really good.

I personally didn't apply but I don't think you need 7A *s to get in.Some people from my class applied without having that many A*s and still got in.They weren't Catholic either.

I was just using 7 as an estimate. You certainly need more than 3, because I applied with the grades in my sig & was told they had fallen below the cut of point [they weren't even enough to get me on the waiting list.]

Lol that's stupid.Your grades are damn good! You should have at least got on the list but what ever happens maybe it's just for the best =p.

Apparently they also require a £5 "donation" after you accept them. I'd rather save my money or my parentsxD.

They certainly wanted a £5 "donation" to stay on the waiting list, [there was big thread about this around the time they sent out the acceptance/rejection letters in April, which is how I know.]

As far as I'm concerned it was there loss not to accept me & its quite funny how I've now ended up at one of the two schools which is home to all the people they rejected.

Pft cheapy colleges- what would be the point if you don't even get in? I joined in December but i didn't really start coming online till a while after that. Yep your right their loss!

Reply 9

I got rejected there
tbh i didnt really bother with mocks though

lol I left last june & come Jan I got a letter from them asking for 'donations'.
They'll always ask you for money- I think it's £20 or more for handouts if you do biology.. but this is for the whole 2 years.

jelly1000- you should've got in, no question!! I know many people who as long as they got 6/7 B or A grades they managed it! But they can be a bit dodgy when it comes to waiting lists, I think they have to accomodate the intake from the harrow schools first.

As for the teaching it really does depend on the subject. For the love of cheese don't do physics there!! the one good physics teacher left 2 years ago and the other guy expects you to know the principles already. If you're noticeably struggling there are workshops and things, but if you happen to have a lazy teacher or busy head of department, you're on your own.

I'd say english, history, and biology departments are quite good. Chemistry and physics not so good. lol!

it's a good college to study for a levels in my opinion - if you can get round with the entry requirements.

Does anyone go to St. Dominic's in Harrow?

In your opinion is it a good college?

What are its bad/good points?

Did you find it easy to make friends?

Yep. It's a good enough college.

Erm it's main bad point is that there is no common room but tbh most of us have just treated the canteen as the common room since they redone it and everything for our year. [I'm gonna be in 2nd year this year]. You also get people going to the library and going to open access etc.
It's other bad point is that some teachers for some subjects can't teach even if their life depended on it. For example, biology, I had to self teach myself 99% of the content.

Otherwise, it's a good college and it's very easy to make friends.

I'm Catholic and i got in with 6A*s and 2As and my friend who isnt Catholic got in with 2A* 4As and 2Bs. Maybe it depends on what subjects you choose.

I'm just worried that i'm making the wrong decision to go there, i'm really bad at making new friends..
Also, are the math teachers good?

Ahh, you've already got in. I thought you were thinking of applying for this year. I'd be interested to know what subjects your friend chose [mine are in my sig] as my predicted grades are almost identical.

I'm not sure if it depends on the subjects. Their picking and choosing seems pretty random. I'm not Catholic & I was predicted 3A*s, 6A's, 2B's and 2C's last year [the c's being for english] and I still got in, whereas one of my mates was predicted no c's and she never got in. But I think for me even though they never said, the condition was that I achieve higher than C's for english for the real thing, which I managed to pull off. Anyhow that said, they miss out on good potential students. The bad thing is that they can only accept about 400 or so and they get thousands of applications so imagine how hard it must be for them.

Don't worry. Honestly the friends part is no issue. At the beginning, the teachers will be doing activities with you in which you get to know each other a bit more. The first few weeks will be pretty hard. But then as the weeks go along, you get more confidence.

The maths teachers are good. There are two Patrick's, and they're the two best maths teachers. One teacher called Krysia laughs to herself all the time and is pretty crap. The others I'm not so sure about.

It must have disappeared =[ (I've lost my smilies]
I applied to do History, Pschycology, English Language & Politics. I can understand that Pschycology is very popular, but my backup was RS which is hardly popular at all. [Apart from St Doms, Nower Hill is the only state school in Harrow to offer it at 6th Form.] And English Language isn't popular either. [St Doms is the only school to offer it thus I am now doing RS] Really not sure about Politics and History.

For some reason It will only come up on my first post in each thread.

For maths, patrick miles is one of the tutors, he's a genius (he can do whole integrations in his head)- actually am pretty sure there's a facebook group devoted to him somewhere.

And seriously, don't worry about the friends part. There are so many different types of people, plus they force you to get to know classmates in tutor groups, RME (sort of RE but not) and activities which you can choose. I'm sure you'll find your friendship group by christmas.

jelly1000- I know this isn't helping, but really cannot understand why you didn't get in- English lang/lit is surprisingly unpopular compared to lit and I know people who got in to do psychcology (cannot spell for the life of me) who scraped C's at GCSE. Buut, it depends who views applications cos the deputy head was strict on my friends, but I had the Principal for my interview & he was offering me further maths A level (???)

Best of luck anyway- if it helps, one of the lang/lit teachers is a real nutcase!
