In terms of what? It's quite a small city, more of a pubbing city than a clubbing one, with decent transport links to several other major cities. Depends what you want to know
I'd be interested in this too. I've been told (I don't know how true it is) that it is very boring and all the students become drug addicts :s-smilie:

If you've come from a particularly metropolitan place with tons of clubs that stay open all night etc then Exeter may come as a shock :p: I wouldn't say it's boring (it has plenty of hidden gems) but it's a purely subjective thing.

And I would say the drug scene was far more prevalent in my secondary school than at Exeter University :s-smilie:

My sister was at medical school there for 2 years and is now completely in love with the place, she just would not stop raving about how amazing a city it is when I gave a vague indication that I was considering it as an option.

Small city but very safe.
There has just been a new massive shopping area opened called princesshay. its got loads like jane norman, schuh, all saints, faith, nandos, loads of other shops and resturants. Also, i've always felt kindof safe in exeter, its just a nice place to live. the campus is really nice too, very green and lovely... i lived there for a week last summer and it was really nice. only downfall was that its on a hill... I've always said i would've applied for exeter uni if i didn't already live here...
I am apply there in september too

So is it more of a quiet place? I have lived in a pretty 'dead' country my entire life (as in NO nightlife other than the cinema) and so i am doubtful about adapting to a big city. So are you saying that it would be less of a jump for me. Someone recently told me it was more 'countryish' than alot of city unis, true? (this person quite likely hasnt a clue what he was on about)

Yes, it is quite countryish/small. You turn on the news and the main story is about a sheep escaping from a field  Very safe too.

Exeter is a great place. Get the train to Bristol if you want a wild weekend however.

Yay thanks... sound like brunei... the national front page news is sometimes just about someone smuggling chicken feet into the country
Pretty safe as far as cities go, quite quiet but enough to keep you entertained for 8 months of the year

living in the country all my life and generally disliking big cities i find exeter to be lovely :^_^: it's fairly small and you can see fields from most places which made me feel at home and i always feel safe walking around which is important.

as already said exeter is more of a pubbing city than a clubbing one although you can make do with the few clubs around and have a good night out

the one negative thing that you can't help but moan about all year is the hills :s-smilie: the uni just happens to be at the top of one...it's particularly bad if you are living in birks or other accommodation at the bottom of cardiac hill (although the hills do provide some great conversations)

overall exeter is a great place to live in
I remember when they put a 'Warning: Steep Hill' sign part way up cardiac...everyone was talking about it for ages!

I read somewhere that Exeter has one of the highest costs of living for universities. Just a point...may be wrong.

I've been placed at Plymouth (the most cost-effective according to that BBC study) then Exeter for Years 3 & 4... - much livelier it seems, but Exeter is really umm... green, and beautiful. The people I met weren't as friendly as those in Plymouth but nice when you get to know them.
Don't take my word for it as I only visited for 2 days.

It's true, it is an expensive place.

My understanding of that survey is that their figures may not mean what it's been suggested they do... as I understand it, they basically looked at how much students spend on average, and how much they earn from part time work. The problem when you apply that to Exeter is that there are quite a high proportion of quite well-off students - who tend to spend more because they have more money, and earn less because they have money anyway and therefore don't need to work.

Granted, though, Exeter isn't the cheapest place in the world to live.
