My history dissertation is going to be 12,000 words. My first and last chapters are both pretty much introductory/concluding, so my word count is high overall but obviously I wouldn't be need really long introductions or conclusions. Is 500 words for each enough? I don't even know what I'd do with 1,000 words for each really

No point padding it out if it's only going to be waffle. As long as you have the key elements in each, then I don't see why not (unless you've been told to meet a certain word count).

Should be ok provided you get it right. My conclusion for my PhD thesis was only 1000 words.
