The number of sweets in tenth bag must be
total number of sweets - total in other nine bags

This hasn't helped at all, the answer that I'm getting ( 40.7) is incorrect according to the website I'm using.

Calculate the mean of the sweets from the bags you know, you can then compare the two means and work out the difference. This should allow you to calculate the final bag.

How many sweets are in the tenth bag?

Work out the total number of sweets in the nine bags = (1 x 39) + . . . = Z

Let the number of sweets in the tenth bag be N. You are told the mean number of sweets in ten bags is 42, which you can express mathematically as an equation: (Z + N)/10 = 42. You should be able to rearrange this equation to find N.
