Concordant coastlines have rock strata parallel to the sea. Often a fault can be exploited if the outermost strata of rock is a hardrock which creates an enclosed bay. Discordant coastlines are where the rock strata are perpendicular to the sea. Alternate layers of hardrock and softrock lead to the formation of headland and bay coastlines as softrock is more vulnerable to marine erosion.
