The tapetum lucidum in animals can be unevenly distributed because of the need to balance optimal night vision with daytime visual acuity, often depending on the specific visual needs of the animal's lifestyle and the area of the retina where the most detailed vision is required; in some cases, the uneven distribution might also be related to the underlying structure of the eye and the way the reflective cells are arranged within the tapetum itself.
