Why do you want to study Biomedical Science?

I want to know why people are applying to study biomedical science at uni.
Also, are you applying for courses that are accredited by the IBMS?
Which universities are you applying to?
What do you plan to do after you graduate with a bachelor's degree in biomedical science? Postgrad? Get a job?

For me, I am applying to do accredited biomedical science courses because I know I could get a job working in the NHS after I graduate.

Yeah, Same I want to get a job in the NHS after graduated, so I'm only looking at courses accredited too
Thinking of Cardiff...went to their open day last month and loved it. What about you?

I want to end up in research, and am planning post grad (at the moment thinking neuroscience) with a bit of luck - so it didn't really matter whether it was accredited or not - saying that, my offer is from Durham which is accredited anyway.

I want to do Biomedical Sciences because... basically otherwise I would have had to go into medicine with no intention of ever being a practising doctor! Research is what I've alwaaaays wanted to do!

I'm thinking...
Durham
Surrey
Lancaster
Reading
Kent
I might replace one with Brighton though, I'm not sure.

I Cardiff accredited? I didn't think it was.

Oh bugger you're right. It's UWIC that is. I just saw Cardiff and thought it was Cardiff not UWIC.
Better start looking elsewhere lol.

biomedical science is what all the cool people study

your better of going for a IBMS accredited degree, cos you will found it easier to get job, and if other stuff fail you have that to fall back on

What I don't understand about the IBMS accreditation is that it is not offered at some of the top unis (Imperial, UCL, Kings etc.).

I was interested in the accreditation, but the only top 10-15 uni to offer it was Durham, which was actually on a completely different campus, at Stockton-on-Tees.

If the accreditation is a must have, I would suggest Durham, Surrey, Essex, Kent or Lancaster.

But, I would personally keep my options open. After all, a non-accredited degree can still get you through the same route (albeit more difficult), and also opens up module choice and specilisation, which will be useful for the research route, if your mind changes...

some of the top uni don't offer it, as they have not met what the IBMS set for accreditation, you need to do the right exams, the right course,
i applied for queen marys, they anit accrediated, but they said thats because they use their biomed cousre as a stepping stone to go on to do medicine, and top unis are going to have more failed medics apply to them so set it, as a stepping stone, i dosn't work for most

Yeah, I was kind of annoyed when I looked at the list of accredited courses and most "top unis" were not on there.

I wonder how much it would furtherly cost to train to become a biomedical scientist (to work in the NHS) if you graduated with a course that wasn't accredited.

it depends cos you have to taken the exams to get accredited, it can even end up you having to re do you degree, i think you ave to extra training on top, even with a accredited degree you still need to do the training, why people do a placement year, so they can do their year training in that year

I didn't even know about accredited uni's until AFTER I applied. This was mostly because I was actually going to do Biology, then changed pretty much last minute, and didn't do much research. It'll just be harder for me :frown:

EDIT: And at the time I wanted to be a teacher anyway.

I love biology but I think biomedical science will teach me more lab skills.

Does anyone know of a biomedical science degree from a "top" uni (therefore not accredited) where you can sit all the exams from an accredited course?

Or rather...is there a university where you could essentially do an accredited course, go to the IBMS after you've graduated, and start working towards your certificate of competence?

Reply 13

Cause the uni I'm doing it at has 30 places reserved at Barts and the London medical school for their biomedical science graduates. If I do well at biomed, I can do medicine, which is what I really want to do.

Reply 14

you need to talk to the university directly and ask them your self. with UCL i know that the course isn't IBMS but if you send IBMS your script (list of modules and topics covered in your course) they will accredit you.

Queen Mary, University of London

O yeah, they have 10 spaces in the graduate programme and 20 in the 5 year MBBS or something right?

Do you by any chance know anything about the standard of St George's Biomed course....I believe they are University of London as well.

Reply 18

Yes.

SGUL is also a very good course if you want to get into medicine after biomed. Those who do very well will be allowed to join year 3 of the SGUL MBBS. I chose QMUL cause I like the area more, but both courses are well respected and from very good unis

Are you going to uni then?

Reply 19

Well, I should have been going this year but I have to wait until next so I can pay home student fees (my parents are putting both my sisters through uni at Internation Student fees which is pretty expensive as you can imagine). But yeah im applying this year and just deciding which Biomed courses to choose. So would you say Tooting (where St Georges is) is not a nice place to live?
