Well, it's not a very good university. In fact, it's near the bottom of the university league tables. What do you want to study? I may be able to recommend some better alternatives.
there may not be many people from that uni that use this site

They're having an open day on 21st August (which I'm going to), so you could have a good look at it then.
It's not the best uni in the world, but it's not the worst either.
Don't always believe reputation, just go where you feel comfortable/happy.
Also, what subject are you thinking of doing?
Sorry that I haven't been very helpful!

I'm thinking of doing goegraphy there...
Which is better Kingston or Greenwich to do geography based courses..
Bearing in mind Kingston offers a lot varied options such as Earth Sciences, Environment and Geography....
I think i should check out the Guardian League ranking for Kingston regarding those courses.

I don't. The Guardian are particularly crap. If you have to use any then ideally the Times http://extras.timesonline.co.uk/tol_gug/gooduniversityguide.php?subject=GEOGRAPHY.

If not them then the Independent

http://www.thecompleteuniversityguide.co.uk/single.htm?ipg=6643

But I'd advise you visit the unis (after all, you live in London, don't you?). Try and take other factors into account. The most important should be course. Are there a wide range of general modules or can you specialise in the areas you want to specialise in? Are you interested in human or physical geography? Also things like student support, financial reasons, surrounding area) and not just league table rankings.

Although, that said, I would expect Kingston to have the strongest department.

It would be ideal if you could get some feedback from current students here. However, that it doesn't have its own forum suggests that there isn't the demand (and many Grenwich students) on TSR. It isn't a major university after all.

What A-level grades do you have? There are much better places in London to do Geography. Have a look at Queen Mary, King's, Brunel, Royal Holloway and UCL.

Okay you have been very helpful.
No, i don't currently live in London, but my family is planning to buy an apartment over there, don't know when.
I go there for vacation and stay a minimum of 2 to 3 wks. But i plan to live there long-term once i get an offer from Kingston ...
My location is somewhere in the Middle East, atm

How do i convince Birmingham Uni to release me?
Is it better to contact them by phone or e-mail them, given my location atm?
(should i contact the admissions tutor for the dept. or the tutor who posted my conditional offer letter to me?)
Kingston is not bad for Environmental Science, on the times, but it's crap for geology...
i'm not planning to study geology anyways

Why don't you want to go to Birmingham? Do you just want to stay close to London? With the greatest respect to Kington (and Greenwich) Birmingham is a solid uni and you should think carefull about this. Of course for all I know the course at Kingston may appeal to you more (and Kingston as a uni can offer what may be a better experience for you), which is fair enough, but if you managed to get an offer from Birmingham you may stand a good chance with KCL should you be interested.

I agree. Birmingham is a very well respected university. Much more so than Kingston or Greenwich. Think VERY carefully before asking to withdraw from your offer. If you really do want to go to London, look at King's College as that's also a highly respected institution that employers will recognise. Failing that, Royal Holloway and Queen Mary are good alternatives. If you're good enough to get into Birmingham, forget about Kingston and Greenwich and focus on the three London unis I mentioned.

The courses i'm interested in are all filled up; UCL , King's College.
I'm not sure if Queen Mary will take me in though, if i think i migt get 3 C's.
I'm not considering Greenwich anymore, just Kingston, coz it offers loads of courses in the field i'm interested in, more than Birmingham too.
What grades count for 240 UCAS tarrif points?
I've done A2 physics, chemistry, biology and geography
Typical offer
Points: 240
Units: to include two A-levels or equivalent

Subjects:

A-levels or equivalent: Geography or Mathematics or other science subject required. General Studies not normally accepted.
Key Skills: points accepted in tariff.
Plus GCSE (A–C): Mathematics and English Language.

So please, how do i convince Birmingham to release me?

You should try Queen Mary anyway. You might still get a place. Did you check Royal Holloway too? Brunel are also worth a look. That's about it as far as decent universities in London for your subject if you say there are no places left at King's or UCL.

Seriously, why are you so determined NOT to go to Birmingham? It is a very good university and it's really not worth dropping your place there in favour of Kingston. You would be making a BIG mistake if you went from Birmingham to Kingston IMHO.

Okay thanks a lot for your advise, mate, i appreciate it
I'll be frank with you, as to why i'm determined not to go to Birmingham,
i have these eerie feeling/thought at the back of my head telling me that i didn't do well at all in this summer's AS and A2 exams. I have resat my AS's 2 times.
2NDLY, i've got close friends from my school(abroad) who have applied to do courses at Kingston. Plus my uncle already owns an apartment in London, which my family will stay in during visits to London e.g. winterbreak.

You can say that i feel more like home at London than Birmingham
The Earth Science courses on offer at Kingston are interesting, field trip to the Isle of Wight.
I've been to London several times and i'm a lot more familiar over there.
Do you think Kingston will take me?

PS: as long as the courses Kingston offer interest me, then i'm happy.
Plus, they have lots of clearing courses on offer already on their site.

I've checked out Brunel yesterday, their courses are filled up the only geog. course left vacant is that combined with sport sciences.

I still have to check Royal Holloway, though

Well, you've obviously thought about it. If you feel that London suits you better as a city (and that Kingston offers a more attractive course) then it's understandable you want to change.

Contact Birmingham and just explain the situation to them and ask if you can be released.

Hi,

so i've phoned up the Admissions at Birmingham University, today and she picked up

and i told her about wanting to be released from there altogether and said that UCAS track will update itself on Thursday and my clearing ID will appear on the site as well,
As for my clearing passport it will posted to me in the post.
Meanhwile, i can still phone up the other Unis i'm interested in, right? eventhough i still don't have a UCAS clearing ID
And discuss the courses i want to study...

Thanks

please....... anyone????
Reply 18
I'm sure you are able to make enquiries even without a Clearing ID. What universities will you contact?
Reply 19
Royal Holloway, Kingston....
Just to express my interest in their courses
