Hi, I'm a year 12 student studying maths, physics and chemistry. I'd love to do astrophysics at uni but I'm unsure about the difference between astrophysics degrees and astronomy degrees and which universities are the best. I'm currently looking at Lecister, St Andrews, and Durham.
Also what kind of things should I be doing to boost my personal statement?
Thanks

So keep in mind with physics, your first two years are probably going to be similar regardless of if you're doing straight physics, theoretical physics, physics with astronomy, etc. Maybe you'll have one unique astro-related module in first and second years, but third year is when you actually get to specialise in a certain area.
So you will have labs and topics that you might not have in mind when you think of astrophysics. Just so you know what you're getting into.
When it comes to professional science, the difference between astronomy and astrophysics is pretty blurred. You can't be a professional astronomer without some background in physics.
As for personal statement material - basically anything to show that you are actually interested in the subject. I'd say clubs and extra-curriculars but... that's kind of out the window now. Books are always a help, but don't turn it into a series of book reviews. The Universe: A Biography by John Gribbin was one I liked. It's mainly on fundamental physics.

Thanks that's really helpful, that book sounds interesting so might give it a read since I can't go to any clubs at the minute.
