Mini fridges, other accommodation questions

Are you allowed to have mini fridges in your room? (self catering accom. if that makes any difference.) If not, do people have them anyway?

I was also wondering about the size of the shared living space, is it just a kitchen or do you get sofas too?

One more thing, do you get a pinboard above your desk for photos? And can you use bluetack/tape to stick things on your walls?

I'm not exactly sure on Edinburgh's rules, went on an open day there about 3 years ago and can't remember.

But in Bristol you aren't supposed to have them, however I know a few people that did and just hid them if they needed the warden for anything.

The living space will completely depend on the hall you are in so i'd check the brochures Edinburgh has and see if you can find pics.

Again same thing with pinboards most will have them, the only problem with buletack is it leaves a greasy stain if you can be bothered to get rid of it no-one will mind but they may take money off your deposit to re-paint the walls.

Hope this helps a bit
I don't know if you are technically allowed fridges according to contract but don't see why it would cause a real problem.

Living space (self catered) is generally a kitchen and seating area in one room. It's not too bad but no sofas so not the most comfortable ever. Some people got sofas for their flats like off the road or from charity shops which is ok as long as it has a fire safety label on it otherwise they will make you chuck it out. You just have to make sure it's gone by the end of the year etc.

I didn't get a pinboard but they let you use drawing pins to put stuff up. You're not allowed to use tac or sellotape.

Hope that helped.
Personal fridges are forbidden in university accommodation, as is the use of blu-tac, sellotape or drawing pins, except on the pinboards provided (there is at least one in most rooms).
Self catered: as i said. drawing pins allowed. i didn't see a pinboard in any room.

Unless I'm going insane I seem to remember the contract only forbade things like fridges if you were in catered accommodation. I'm not 100% on that, but I think that was the case. We were told off-hand that pins were ok and everyone used them - we used bluetac too. Depends how much you value your deposit i guess. No sofas in your kitchen, just a table, chairs for the table, and "easy" chairs which are rubbish. We bought a sofa.

Apparently (according to my accommodation manager last year) pin boards are only provided in Pollock and for all the self-catered lot do not get them at all under any circumstances, despite whatever listings on accommodation services website say. We were told that drawing pins in the walls are fine and what we're supposed to do - the walls were our pinboards.

I equally don't remember if fridges were completely forbidden, I know that my coffee machine was allowed and that's far more dangerous than a mini fridge :p:. And one of my flatmates had one that noone complained about so I guess they're fine.

In the accomodation contract this year unfortunately it does say that fridges, irons (which aren't provided in the flats - HOW ARE WE SUPPOSED TO HAVE NON-CREASED CLOTHES?!?) and other electrical items aren't allowed in rooms. :frown:

There's no way that you are not going to be allowed an iron. They give you an ironing board so they expect it of you. Probably you're not allowed to use it in your room. (And are you sure you're reading the right bit of the accommodation contract because the stuff for Pollock and self-catered is both written on it).
Yeh I think that is just about Pollock, they don't provide you with an iron in selfcatered so you'd need to get one.

You planted a seed of doubt so I went and double checked the contract.

It says under tenancy obligations (6.15) that

"In Halls of Residence, the use of personal kettles, irons, fridges and electric heaters is strictly prohibited."

It didn't seem to separate between catered/self-cat - would halls of residences just be Pollock or university flats as well? : / 'Cos you're right - if they provide an ironing board, surely they're expecting you to provide the iron. :P
I'd say 'Halls of Residence' means just Pollock. Like has been said, it'd be silly to provide people with ironing boards if irons weren't allowed. At least last year, I didn't hear of anyone getting complaints about having an iron. (We had one also.) And the flat upstairs had a minifridge in the kitchen, and they didn't get any complaints.

I had a look round Robertson's close yesterday, and both rooms I looked at had blue pin-boards in them.

Oooer. Good for them  some may come furnished with such exciting items then. But noone I know (or talk to about it) had one supplied. They all rushed off to tesco to purchase them instead.

I'm just puzzled, what at university would possibly need ironing??
I don't recall a single person ever a) having an iron, b) asking for one c) even having the remotest idea how to use one..

What an odd thing to say :s Your personal inexperience in the use of an iron is not representative of the general student body. Do you not own any shirts?

Indeed; I regularly make the conscious decision not to iron my shirts, but I do own an iron, items which needs ironing, and am aware how to do it

Most shirts come out nicely pressed out of the tumble dryer when folded in there. You don't need to iron most of the time - anyway, it's not as if most students would be kicking about in a suit-type shirt!

To be sexist for a moment - oh my god - you're male, aren't you? :P

I'm sorry, but when it comes to ironing, i'm a bit of a perfectionist. Clothes just don't as finished if you don't iron them properly! :O It's just one of my annoying little habits that's going to make my flatmates want to kill me after the first year. :yep:
