University of Edinburgh textbooks

I am planning on studying Earth Sciences at university and was looking at getting ahead by reading some of the textbooks, but they are all really expensive and I was wondering if people actually buy them? Can you easily rent them? Is there any point in buying them?
Idk about renting textbooks but I’d say try looking for used textbooks on eBay and see what you can find
