How does Simon Armitage present conflict in this poem?
Simon Armitage presents conflict in remains as unjust and unfair, the looter in the poem may have been dangerous he could have been unarmed and therefore actually not dangerous to the soldiers so it was unnecessary to shoot. ‘Probably armed, possibly not’ this shows the soldiers didn’t even know if the looters were armed causing them to feel even more guilty even though it was not their fault but the commanding officers who the men were acting orders from. The speaker’s experience of killing the man affects him so much that gives him PTSD as he is guilt ridden by taking that man’s life and feels more guilt as the man may have been innocent but there is no way of knowing because the looter is killed by rounds of bullets that the group of soldiers send into him. ‘I see every round as it rips through his life/ I see broad daylight on the other side’ this shows that the loots life is suddenly ended with no questions asked. The speaker sees ‘broad daylight on the other side’ this suggests this happened very quickly and one minute the man is alive and the next, dead. Even though the speaker has gone through unspeakable things and no one seems to notice the effect, it would have on the person and it seem that he gets no support and help for his trauma that he is suffering from.
You writing style isn't very academic, and your sentences can be quite long. Also, analyse the literary techniques used.
