Hey, I'm new here so not too sure if this is in the right place but oh well...
Ok so I'm doing adv English this year and before we broke up for summer my teacher said by the time we go back we should know what we're doing and have read the texts.
I still have absolutely no idea what to do, I mean NO idea!
I'm really stressed about this, is there a list of approved texts from the SQA or anything like that? Or anyone who's done Adv English have any ideas or tips?
Because the English Dept. at my school fear my paper has been incorrectly marked. You don't want to sit a subject and face that sort of injustice. Stay well clear.
I apologise for sounding so bleak though. Never mind, I am only 'competent' at the subject anyway.

Hmm, that can't be good. Did you get an appeal?
I suppose that could really happen in any subject though?

Most other subjects are marked more objectively. For an answer to be rewarded marks in other subjects then you need to have said x, y and z. English marking schemes tend to be more "give it as many marks as you think it is worth" so it's normally harder to know where you are at.
On the original subject, there have been plenty of topics on AH English dissertations throughout the forum with dissertation ideas, so while I wouldn't suggest simply copying one it might give ideas about the sort of topics discussed. The SQA doesn't give any dissertation suggestions so it's up to you to come up with the topic yourself. Basically I would advise considering your favourite books/poems/plays, authors, genres and seeing if there are a few you can make connections about that you are sufficiently interested in to write ~4000 words about.

English isn't entirely subjective either, as your post indicates. The people who mark English happen to be rather competent at it; suffice to say if you've managed to put what you meant on paper, then you'll be marked accordingly. Problems only arise when people aren't able to differentiate (no, not dy over dx - though, that'd make it much easier, x,y,z and that) between what they write and what they meant to write, much more an issue that students suffer from, I'm sure you'll agree.....

I didn't suggest that English markers are incompetent. I simply pointed out that there is more discretion in the marking scheme. Therefore the marks allocated to a paper can vary more significantly than in, say, Maths. As such it is more plausible that a candidate or school can have grievances over their results in English than in more objectively marked subjects where the distinction in mark allocation is more clear cut.
Of course moderation will help to even out markers' interpretations, but this is much more difficult for teachers that don't mark for the SQA which I suspect accounts for the majority of teachers who teach the subject.
Ok I think the main point here is I'm taking advanced english, there's no going back now so I'm all set, apart from still needing to figure out what to write on ...
Out of interest, does anyone else's school opt for the creative writing folio as the optional unit?
I have two enormous texts to read for my dissertation and a sizeable play to write for Tuesday. Don't think it's gonna happen.
I blame Guitar Hero.
I did the creative writing folio ^^ I've just left school.
It is a lot of work but really enjoyable - I had to go to a different school to do the AH course, but my normal school's English teacher tutored me for my dissertation. My creative folio pieces were still in process right up to the day before the exam :/
Oooh a play! I did reflective and short story and my dissertation was on Unreliable narrator in Lolita and Catcher in the rye... What's your's on?
Hello everyone, thank goodness for this thread, I need some other people to freak out about AH english with! Anyone else feel completely lost about this dissertation?! I have some texts in mind but its pretty hard to know where to start and what to do next once I've got them!
Really excited about the creative writing though - they totally deprived us of it at higher and that killed me
Out of interest, what texts are you all doing for the actual exam part?
