Universities Admission - opportunity to redress the application process

Given the current situation where pupils cannot sit A’ level exams and are looking at entering University based on teachers perceptions, does the current situation not provide an opportunity to reset the exam situation, so that pupils can apply to a university and get a response based on their current work to date? There is so much stress around taking exams and this not being a true representation of a students ability, so would moving to something more akin to the USA system of a ‘grade point average’ be more reflective of this in a more real world scenario?
