Interesting development. Not surprised, though.

Basically, Trump’s just trying to palm off the blame. He doesn’t know what he’s doing and mistakes have been made, so I guess now he figures he’ll pretend someone else is at fault.

Not surprised, Trump is also using WHO's failure to divert blame and his own failures. I'm curious as to how other super powers will respond (even though their funding is very little).

Well no one ever claimed Trump was particularly smart. Plus, given the spectacularly poor handling of it in america he doesnt seem to have a leg to stand on.

Ouch.

WHO is under the pay and influence of China.. Despite america paying them far more money each year.

Either america is really bad at getting a return for its investment in terms of influence, or its more like just standard trump - someone says something he doesn't like, and he tries to bully his way through them.

Its just amazing how many of his supporters can't see that he is doing exactly what they accuse China of doing..

They love it when he says that China is buying/influencing the WHO...
Yet they also love it when their guy starts to say he will only give the WHO money if they say what he wants...
He's in a narcissistic rage and anxious to blame America's huge coronavirus problem on someone else.
Although it does seem like he was right (for once) to ban flights from China in late January.

Now is definitely not the right time to be suspending WHO funding
There is a long list of Trump failings on the pandemic. The WHO made one or two errors - they sent out an incorrect tweet about physical distancing early on in January, which they corrected shortly afterwards and they continued to recommend not blocking international flights longer than they should have, against a background where every country in the world was keen to continue to allow open flights and few had proper quarantine measures.

Yet previously Trump was positive about both China and the WHO.

24 January Trump tweeted: “China has been working very hard to contain the Coronavirus. The United States greatly appreciates their efforts and transparency. It will all work out well. In particular, on behalf of the American People, I want to thank President Xi!”

7 February WHO had declared a public health emergency, Trump was asked if China was engaged in a cover up. “No, China’s working very hard ... and I think they’re doing a very professional job. They’re in touch with World Health.”

27 February Multiple warnings from the intelligence agencies and his own advisers, but Trump was still minimising the virus, stating: “It’s going to disappear. One day it’s like a miracle it will disappear.” By the end of the month, the US had only conducted around 4,000 tests for coronavirus while other countries tested tens of thousands of people.

In what universe is that true?

Either america is really bad at getting a return for its investment in terms of influence, or its more like just standard trump - someone says something he doesn't like, and he tries to bully his way through them.

More likely the latter. Him and his acolytes being famously hostel to multilateral institutions. Although if he does collapse the main international bulwark against future pandemics and such i would sincerely hope he gets the blame for it.

Its just amazing how many of his supporters can't see that he is doing exactly what they accuse China of doing..

In fairness, no one claimed his supporters were particularly intellectually nimble

Both of those statements are wrong. They have been brilliant at organising against recent pandemic-threats, like Ebola. They are not political but they do in the real world have to deal with governments that are often foolish, malicious or authoritarian and they do their best to negotiate past them to help their poor citizens. That's what they've been trying to do in China. They had to deal with a regime that to start with persecuted doctors who reported the disease. To some extent, China is still doing it - they recently disappeared a woman scientist who was vocal about it early on. They managed to persuade the rather stupid Chinese leader to let their experts in. It's actually the opposite of Trump's accusations. Notice Trump doesn't go after the Chinese government, who are the real villains of the piece. Presumably he doesn't want to endanger critical supplies coming in to the US.

Trump takes more than his share of potshots, but that doesn’t mean he’s always off the mark. China and the WHO aren’t scapegoats, but genuine malefactors who deserve all the obloquy the president, and anyone else, can heap on them.

It is true that at the crucial early spread phase, the CCP were engaged in face-saving misinformation. During those weeks up to the end of January, they thwarted attempts by WHO medical officials to enter the Wuhan zone and examine the medical data themselves, Trump is right about that.

Part of the problem lies in the way the WHO has been funded up to now. The US has not kept up with existing funding commitments to the UN generally, which has made UN bodies more reliant on other key countries like China, which do foot their UN bills properly. So it's perhaps not too surprising if the WHO leadership were tending to listen to China more.

That article accepts that Trump is a slippery confuser and evader who is using this to distract from his own mishandlings. That said, I agree there's a case that China has also behaved very badly. I just don't think blaming the WHO for it is fully correct.

The WHO took everything China said at face-value, with no scrutiny whatsoever. (i.e No human-human transmission)

The WHO effectively ignored Taiwan and its warnings.

The WHO claimed banning flights was ineffective.

We’ll never know how differently things may have acted out had the WHO been more reactionary.

China lied, and has lied the entire way through this outbreak.

The WHO has parroted whatever China told them and that is what has spread this virus.

They are still reporting the official figures from the CCP as the truth 😂

They haven't continued to parrot China - the WHO realised the Chinese were misleading them badly in late Jan and started adopting a more distanced stance.

Every major reporting on Coronavirus figures has to take what national government official bodies are saying as true, including the WHO, which is obliged to as a matter of UN diplomatic courtesy. It's correct for the global media to point out the lies. The UK has been lying as well, ignoring the social care death figures in the official reports.

I'm not defending China because they are a vile regime, but pinning it all on the WHO is just confusing carts and horses.

So what have the WHO done so far in this crisis? I haven't heard of them doing anything.

The latest thing they have their thumb up their bum about is not recommending mask wearing.
This is typical Trump/American tactic. They messed up, tried to pretend nothing was amiss, and now that it is coming back to bite them, they have decided to scapegoat a black man.

He was not right to ban flights from China. Look at how it ended up - America is now the worst affected country on the planet.

I think he was right to ban flights from China and from Europe too, had they not done so they would have even more cases
