The Student Room Group

You really should not be leaving the house except to go to work if you are a key worker unable to work from home, for reasonable exercise, or to go to buy groceries or collect medicine(s) from the pharmacy. Doing otherwise defeats the entire purpose of the social distancing measures in place, and will do nothing than potentially extend the length of time they will be necessary for.

While I can sympathise with difficulties in studying from home, you really just need to try and identify what are the issues and take steps to mitigate them - for example, using earplugs/headphones to drown out ambient noise, collecting your study materials (including if necessary printing any online materials) and taking them into a separate room away from your computer and phone to avoid distractions from the internet, etc.
If you stick around in parks for a sit down on a bench or on a rug say, the police if they are there will move you along and state going out is for exercise only. Unless you can find somewhere that not many people go to.
Is it a room in halls, or a studio? If the former, if there's a shared kitchen area you could try working in there (if nobody else is in there). Otherwise, try putting your computer away, if you can, or covering it/turning it off so it's less likely to distract you - likewise with your phone.
You can handwrite them initially and then just type up the completed essay - when you're at the stage of just typing up and have already done all the actual thinking about what you are going to write, it won't take as long and getting distracted won't matter so much.
Same here. Interesting thread, nice q.

And the update following the extension of lockdown is that people are not to work in parks or spend a long time sitting on public benches.
Hi there

First let us understand that this is a situation faced by world wide students.
Make sure you identify what the obstacles you meet during ur studies. As youve mentioned its all about distractions and your interest on Youtube. Lets first try to cope up with that.
The outer noise is something which we cannot control. We hv no ryt to shut their mouths or stop the small kid playing . I think you can overcome this by shutting all ur doors and windows and making sure u hear nothing from outside. Atleast there might be a least possible way to avoid noises coming in. However if you cannot arrange according to this way i think we should respect the concept " Live the Hard Way"
And secondly, u shouldnt allow ur inner thoughts and interests to disrupt or discontinue ur studying at tht moment. U should keep in mind the concept "Working on myself, For myself"
And whenever u feel to watch Youtube Vids, swipe through Instagram , facebook u can prepare a break for your studies. i mean just pause your studying and take a break and engage with ur interests. For example a 20 mins break.

Hope you could get something out of me.
Thank you.
Do it in ur garden
how on earth do people study in parks? I'm never comfortable enough. I need a desk, chair and internet access.
You don’t need a link.
You have known the rules for three weeks. You should not be out unless you are exercising for 1 hour, food shopping or collecting medicine.
How many times does it need to be said.
A person can dislike it as much as they want but the more the rules are disregarded, the longer and harsher lockdown will be. It’s that simple
Omg, so sad :frown:, wish you the best. Here, there's an annoying couple (guy with younger/childish/immature brother) that can sometimes get a bit noisy, e.g. phone on speaker and them shouting on it outside their room in kitchen which is close to my room, the crybaby is noisy and over last week or so due to smoking he got a fire alarm going at 5am:eek::frown:, who does this? I'm very upset over this situation, bcos this horrible couple, being temporary and given notice and under eviction potentially, they were supposed to go actually, but they didn't bcos of this Covid situation making everyone stay Home, evictions banned etc, and to make it worse, a very nice, fantastic flatmate lady here will be leaving next month bcos she also hates this couple and can't put up with em any longer. It's a HUGE mess this Corona situation in individual lives etc. Then, being out of work to make it even worse and gatherings/socialising restrictions etc...

No kids as per say here tho or a fighting couple (but previous place some time ago had a fighting couple so I know what it's like, horrible). So I think your situation is worser/harder with regards to trying to study at Home. You may want to put on headphones, play some music on - YES DURING STUDY indeed, even though we don't listen to music during study, we normally have silence etc. I 💯 agree with regards to the preference for a different study area. I know it's hard practically doing it on bed, e.g, writing. Maybe try like this - study at desk, even then only study involving writing, and other study like say watching on iPad lectures you do on bed along with your downtime like say TSR, social media etc. Alongside, definitely go outside atleast once during the day for fresh air to help (I tend to go afternoon - I read somewhere dat 14:17 is sleepiest time of daytime due to circadian rhythms etc, and I must admit my head feels a greater amount of "strain" from afternoon study, so maybe less reading over this time and either instead time outside or watching lectures on iPad etc). Give yourself breaks, even 1-2m standing up every 1h helps, as it keeps blood flowing at standing rate, no slowing down too much etc. I know studying is main thing, but still fptime to time do something else to get your mind off it, like cleaning, hobbies etc. Also, don't abandon routine due to this unlimited time at Home, instead use it wisely, don't get complacent and keep routine in place.

I can comment as much as I like on a public forum.
You’re by no means the only one finding it difficult but most people aren’t trying to find ways to break the rules
In the last week my mother in law has died. Alone. And our crematoriums are closed to family so she will leave the undertakers and be cremated alone. Today my sons friend died aged 24 of the virus. 24 hours after his father.
So I have zero patience with people who look for ways to break the rules
Perhaps it could help if you use a hard "mat"/hardbound notepad to write on top of whilst writing in bed. Also, you could try floor with a cloth of course under you for cleanliness, but this might be hard. Have you tried like going outside, sitting down on a bench and then writing on top of a hardbound notepad/hard "mat" ?

Thank you. Like 99% we’re doing our best.
No, as that is "breaking" the lockdown rules and I have a quiet place to work?
People who break the rules deserve nothing less than a criminal conviction

Do you know what complacent means? If so, you ought to apologise immediately, because this is an outrageous reply to Sam's circumstances
