Wellbeing at home

Hi all,

It’s a strange time right now with a large portion of the world under some form of lockdown, so we thought we’d give you a few tips on how to maintain your wellbeing whilst being wherever your homebase is right now.

1. Firstly, if you’re feeling down or anxious, TALK to someone in real time. A friend (home or a uni friend), or a family member in person if you live with them, or on the phone if you don’t. Use video calling and organise set times to meet up and talk. Talking in real time makes a huge difference when compared to messaging. Don’t bottle up your emotions

2. If you find yourself needing to talk to someone and aren’t sure where to look, or don’t want to talk to a friend or member of the family, use the Hub of Hope. They show support that’s available based on your location.

3. There are plenty of apps available to use and “meet” your friends and family online and plenty of creative ways they’re being used, such as “watching” a film together or hosting a pub quiz at home, so try them to keep in touch and maintain your social network.

4. If you find the constant newsfeeds are causing anxiety and taking up too much time in your day, set time aside to check the media once a day at a specific time to get the latest updates and only use reputable sources.

5. Covid-19 has caused a lot of changes to our usual routines and completely changed our lives. Many activities we normally do or take for granted we simply can’t do right now and it’s easy to feel aimless, and like our days are merging into one. Have or maintain a routine. Having a routine will give your days structure and routine which can help in a period of uncertainty. As much fun as staying in your pajamas all day is, it won’t help your wellbeing in the long run. So, get dressed for the day. Try to follow your ordinary routine as much as possible. Get up at the same time as normal, follow your usual morning routines, and go to bed at your usual time. Set alarms to remind you of your new schedule if that helps. BUT…. feel free to change it around if it's not working. Add in more time cooking, add in more time gaming or reading if you want, but try and keep to a routine that works for you. Set 2 manageable goals a day to give you a sense of accomplishment.

6. Eat well and stay hydrated. It’s very easy to find yourself constantly grazing on snacks through boredom, especially with all those Easter treats hanging around! But try and eat health if possible. This could be a time to learn to cook healthy meals. Eating regular healthy meals can help maintain energy and mood levels. Your appetite can also change as you are less active. Staying hydrated is also important for mental and physical health, especially as the weather improves and becomes warmer. There are plenty of apps that can remind you to drink fluids if you find yourself forgetting!

7. You can exercise outside as permitted by the government, but remember to keep to the social distancing guidelines! Currently, there are lots of free apps and exercise regimes out there that you can use indoors or in a back garden if you have access to one. For example, many football teams have released fitness videos to follow to keep active and they’re free. Build physical activity into your daily routine if possible and it will become a habit.

8. You can still volunteer at this time. The NHS Volunteer Responder scheme had an amazing response and is now live with its own app. There are several options to join, including doing shopping or collecting medicines for isolating people if you have transport and even just calling isolating people for a chat so they have a friendly voice to talk to. You can also check your local councils website for volunteer opportunities.

9. There are plenty of free ways to stay entertained, with live streamed gigs and theatre shows on offer as well as the usual fare on the likes of paid services such as Netflix (Tiger King anyone?). Disney+ and BritBox have free trials too.

10. You can use your free time to try and learn a new skill. But if you don’t want to or don’t master a new skill, don’t worry. There’s lots of posts on social media of people listing everything they’ve done or planned or learnt, but don’t let that put pressure on you to learn a new language in a week! It’s perfectly OK if you leave this period of lockdown without mastering a new skill.

11. RELAX. If you want to plan a duvet day where you watch films all day with your friends on a social app watching the same film, go for it. Relaxing is very important right now.

Remember, if you have a bad day, don’t worry, it’s OK to not be OK in this strange and alien time. Talk to friends and family about it and it’s a fresh start the next day.

We can do this together.
