Some info on bank HCA work please

Hi, I’ve just been offered a bank HCA job which is perfect for me as I really want to get into working in health care but also have young children so need to work around them for the time being.

I’ve never worked in a hospital before and just wondered what to expect. Can anyone give me any info please? Anything you think will be helpful to know beforehand would be appreciated.

Also, I know it may differ depending on which trust you are with but are all wards included in shifts available? I.e. adult, paediatric and maternity?

Thank you!
Hello  really just depends on the demand for bank shifts! Most wards have their own pool of bank staff that they call upon when they need staff due to them knowing the ward, mostly childrens and maternity and specialised areas. But if you were really keen after a couple of bank shifts you could go and speak to the ward manager and ask if theres any shifts available. This again just depends on the trust! There could be loads available.

Expect to do alot of bed making and cleaning down bed spaces upon a patients discharge, giving out dinners, making breakfasts for patients, assisting with feeding, ALOT of personal care, bed bathing, moving and handling, repositioning patients etc. Restocking the ward ie: putting away delivery, restocking pads, syringes, medical equipment.

These just vary with all wards but those are the jobs of a HCA

Good luck! And hope this helps
