Well, both semantic memory and episodic memory are classed as something called declarative memory. Declarative memory is memory that can be consciously recalled or "declared". It is also classed as an explicit memory, as it is thought that this type of memory can be explicitly stored and recalled.

Episodic memory is based on "episodes", or events. It is based on memories of things that happened that you can recall, examples including but not limited to, your sister's wedding, the name of your childhood pet, where you were when you found out about a terrible event, etc. Episodic memory is different to semantic memory because episodic is the recall of actual events or "episodes", whilst semantic is more based arounf your understanding.

Semantic memory is classed as declarative memory, just like episodic memory, but is based around understanding. Examples would include, but not be limited to, your understanding of the difference between a dog and a cat, being able to associate sounds with letters, recalling how to tie your shoelaces or how to use a phone, etc.

Hope this helps
