How long would you expect a winter coat to last?

Since the Topshop coat I bought two years ago is looking decidedly shabby, I'm looking for a new one that I hope will last a few winters longer. So that I can be more discerning when buying my new coat, I'm wondering what the rest of you take into consideration when buying a winter coat.

Do you buy a new coat every one or two years? This sounds extravagant, but winter coats do get worn pretty much every day from as early as September to as late as March, and as such, do begin to look worn after only a couple of seasons.

Or, do you invest in a more expensive, better quality coat? If so, do you find that it lasts much longer than cheaper coats? Is price necessarily an accurate indication of quality? How can you tell if a coat will last?

Finally, how much are you willing to pay for your coat, and which shops do you tend to buy them from?

Go for quality, price does not always mean quality so check around. Look at the material and any design details which are indicative of quality.
2 years for a winter coat to last seems the norm.

I got one from Massimo Dutti today for £145. I start a new job soon and I'm hoping it will last a good 2-3 years. I have a Karen Millen one which I bought 3 years ago- I keep having to mend the lining but it's lasted so so long (it cost £200) and I still intend to carry on wearing it. I dno't intentionally buy an expensive one but the material and cut is so much nicer. Now's a really good time to buy as the new stock is coming in and it's easier to find your size!

Does anyone know how a fitted coat should feel? I know it should be a bit bigger to account for a jumper or layers underneath it, but how tight should it be?
ive never really had a proper coat so decided to get myself a nice thick one last year. im hoping itll last a few more years  id expect a winter coat to last at least 3 years!

Well I had one from next which was pure wool, last year and its still good for this year easily. And the updated version doesn't look much diffrent just more defined sholder pads:

But it is like new atm, for £80 its not bad.

i always want every coat i see, but realistically , ie financially, it is silly to buy everything I want, haha.

A good winter coat should last a minimum of 3 years really, I think 6 years tends to be the absolute max.

Mine is getting shabby after 3 years already, i hoped it would last longer.
If I buy a new one then that will make three winter coats in my wardrobe.
Hmmm... I can't bear to throw them away, they aren't that bad... haha, but if they aren't that bad then why do I need a new one?

I think if you are like me and can't bear to part with a winter coat, let it go and buy a new one just before the old one become unwearable. Then you can wear your old one when you need a coat that colour or shape or cut and your new one just won't do.
No wonder I never have any room in my wardrobe :o: .

I would spend a max of 120£ on a coat. Got my first one from a shop that sold Miss Sixty and those kind of brands. It's faux sheep skin full length and the heaviest and warmest jacket known to man. :yep:
So warm I can't wear it in London I found out! Well, it only cost me 30DM (10£), so I bought a new one when I moved to the UK. It was a lot thinner and posher, in black from Zara (60£).
Love Zara for posh coats, expect that the quality was bad. :s-smilie:
The lining ripped all over it.

When buying the coat make sure the lining is not too lose but not too tight either, or it'll rip!!!

My winter coat cost about 80 quid. It has lasted two years and since for the next 3 I will be a poor student- I don't intend to buy a new one for a while.
my current winter coat cost 299 by the north face, has kept me warm and dry for two winters now, wore it all week when i was in iceland and will last me for years to come.

might sound alot of money to spend initialy, but its better than spending 100 every year for the next 5 or whatever

take your thickest jumper clothes shopping with you! :yep:
I don't know what i do with mine, but they only seem to last one season! I'm going to blame London. Well i get cheap ones from Dorothy Perkins anyway. But even my French Connection one got shabby after a year. I guess i like buying cheap (£50 ish), as i tend to go off my coat after a year anyway and want a new one. So it suits me.
With any luck my 200GBP Austin Reed coat will last 2-3 years in terms of it fitting me  I don't think I'm going to grow appreciably anytime soon.
i need a coat :frown:

arghhhhh, I have had to buy a new coat every year for teh last three years on account of losing weight. So now I have 3 coats (1 from the Edinburgh Woolen Mills in an 18 , another from Miss Selfridge in a 14 and a Debenhams one in a 12). Seeing as I now ned an 8 they're all a bit too big  but my parents won't let me buy another *proper* coat so I'll have to get a pea coat or something from Dorothy Perkins :frown:
I can never find one I like. :frown:

I'd expect mine to last about two winters, because that's how long I'd take to get bored of it and want a new one. My current one has lasted that long- its H&M and the only damage its sustained is some rips in the lining.

It would last as long as I needed it to
One of my favourite winter coats has lasted me about 4 years already, it was from principles and not hugely expensive. I have other random ones which I don't wear loads so they will probably also last a while due to the lack of wear.

sell your old ones on ebay to come up with some cash to put towards your new coat?

i spent £200 on a coat 3 years ago and it's still as good as new, only problem being i'm now about 3 clothes sizes smaller so it looks terrible and too big, so i'm going to spend on a new one this season. I plan to buy a gorgeous french winter coat when i move over to live in France in september though
