Reaction C: C14H6Cl2O2+ C4H11NO2 -----> C22H28N4O4

Prepared from C14H6Cl2O2 in DMSO and a large excess of C4H11NO2, the solution was refluxed for 1 hour.

In reaction C, why is a very large
excess of C4H11NO2 used compared to the quantity C14H6Cl2O2?

Usually it's to drive the reaction to completion. Many organic reactions are equilibria, unless a volatile component is produced.

Depending on the type of reaction, an excess of one of the reagents can be in place to PREVENT reaction with some other reagent. Effectively you can smother a compound with what you actually want it to react with.

If you were trying to find the rate WRT one reactant, a large excess of t'other would effectively make it zero order WRT that excess chemical.

I'd bet that isn't relevant here, but it is a reason for using an excess.
