You must have been. What you said is rubbish. As has been repeatedly stated on this thread, an A* will be awarded to those that get an A grade overall in AS and A2 combined, and who get 90% or more on average in the A2.
Notice the "at first" point, I'm sure in 10 years time offers will be using A* in some way. This is very sensible tbh, after the reforms to the A-level it is impossible to know how many people will gain A* and above.
If you achieve A* A* A* and another application achieves AAA - they will view both as exactly the same. (Source: Email from Oxford Admissions) Reply With Quote
That's a slight misinterpretation surely- what they've said is that they won't make offering including A* grades for the first year. They've said nothing about subsequent years, including the first year people will be able to apply already having A* grades.

I agree that they may well, having gained experience with the usefulness and knowledge of the statistics of the A*, switch to using it for offers. However, nobody will be able to apply after the AS year after having attained an A*, since you can only get an A* based on the A2 exams (unless they did the whole A level in one year, of course).

But you would possibly have post results applicants applying in their gap year...

Oh, of course, but will many have done whole A levels in one year starting from now? Significant numbers will not be in that position until after June 2010.
That indeed was the timescale i was referring to- Beska said that oxford's position will be to regard someone with A*A*A* exactly the same as someone with AAA- i was disagreeing because oxford have only said they wouldn't be using a*s in the first year they're available.
That doesn't make sense, so if you get an A say 80% in AS and 90% in A2 you get an A* in your A level. That means the AS grade doesn't count per say. This gives an average of 85%?
Yes, if you get 80% at AS and 90% at A2, you get an A*. But if you get for example 65% at AS and 90% at A2, you don't get an A* because the overall grade isn't 80%. You need to satisfy both criteria: 80% overall, and 90% A2.

Yeh you could get 60% in as and 100& in a2 and get an A*.
