Oxford Uni won't use A* grade at A-level in its offers

Either that or I misread it. :s-smilie:
I can't find it now.

Was I dreaming? :o:

You must have been. What you said is rubbish. As has been repeatedly stated on this thread, an A* will be awarded to those that get an A grade overall in AS and A2 combined, and who get 90% or more on average in the A2.
sharp910sh
so you could get 60% in as and 100% in a2 and still get an A*. I get you.

It didn't take long, did it? I'm beginning to wonder why you've got the word "sharp" in your user name.
chris1200
Why didn't you get here earlier??

No one listened to me... lol

I didn't hear the bugle call.

This has been known for quite a long time now.

If you achieve A* A* A* and another application achieves AAA - they will view both as exactly the same. (Source: Email from Oxford Admissions)

That explains a lot then. You cottoned on very quickly, for a mobile telephone.

i am so happy to hear this.
I reckon that while i probably could get A*s, it would mean so much more work, than not having to worry about them

Notice the "at first" point, I'm sure in 10 years time offers will be using A* in some way. This is very sensible tbh, after the reforms to the A-level it is impossible to know how many people will gain A* and above.

That's a slight misinterpretation surely- what they've said is that they won't make offering including A* grades for the first year. They've said nothing about subsequent years, including the first year people will be able to apply already having A* grades.

I agree that they may well, having gained experience with the usefulness and knowledge of the statistics of the A*, switch to using it for offers. However, nobody will be able to apply after the AS year after having attained an A*, since you can only get an A* based on the A2 exams (unless they did the whole A level in one year, of course).

But you would possibly have post results applicants applying in their gap year...

Oh, of course, but will many have done whole A levels in one year starting from now? Significant numbers will not be in that position until after June 2010.

That indeed was the timescale i was referring to- Beska said that oxford's position will be to regard someone with A*A*A* exactly the same as someone with AAA- i was disagreeing because oxford have only said they wouldn't be using a*s in the first year they're available.

That doesn't make sense, so if you get an A say 80% in AS and 90% in A2 you get an A* in your A level. That means the AS grade doesn't count per say. This gives an average of 85%?

Yes, if you get 80% at AS and 90% at A2, you get an A*. But if you get for example 65% at AS and 90% at A2, you don't get an A* because the overall grade isn't 80%. You need to satisfy both criteria: 80% overall, and 90% A2.

No, you're right. You need 90% in all A2 modules to get an A*. I'll see if I can find a source.

No. You need 90% average across the A2 modules.

See http://www.qca.org.uk/qca_4076.aspx

which says

Revised A level specifications are being introduced in September 2008, with a new A* grade awarded from 2010 to those students who have achieved:

a grade A overall at A level and
the A* on an aggregated A2, i.e. 180 out of 200 UMS for the combined scores of the two A2 units.

The A* grade will not be awarded at AS level because the more challenging material is introduced at A2 only.

I stand corrected. Although I swear I've read somewhere that you need 90% in all modules..
