The Student Room Group

help with maths

A school rewards students for good work by giving them merit points.James has x merit points.
Sarah has twice as many merit points than James.
Robert has 60 fewer merit points than James.Each merit point is worth 3 pence.
All three of the students have a total of £12.84Work out how many merit points each student has.
((100 x 12.84) = 1284)) then (1284 divided by 3 = 428) so on total there are 428 merit points.
Number of people is 3, Sarah (S) = 2 James (J) and Robert (R) is J-60. 428 divided by 3 = 142.6(143)
Sorry the rest I don’t know, anyone else want to try to help with these question, and expand on what I’ve worked out already?
I think it’s
James: x points
Sarah: 2x
Robert: x-60
(X+2x+(x-60))*0.03=12.84
(4x-60)*0.03=12.84
12.84/0.03=428
4x-60= 428
4x=428+60=488
X=488/4=122
Therefore:
James=122 points
Sarah=244 points
Robert=62 points
122+244+62= 428
428*0.03=12.84
(edited 3 years ago)
((100 x 12.84) = 1284)) then (1284 divided by 3 = 428) so on total there are 428 merit points.
Sarah has twice as many as James say 2x
James has half as many as Sarah say x
Robert has 60 fewer than James say x-60
All this added together giver 428
2x+x+x-60=428
Solve this equation for x, substitute back into the sentences above you'll find you answer
If you still can't figure it out or have any more question lmk
