I think this question has an open answer.
One perspective is for prisons to punish and the other perspective is for prisons to rehabilitate.
Personally, I think a prison should punish and rehabilitate
And if you wanna answer ‘can people really change?’ Part why don’t you research criminals who were in prison and whether they’ve changed or not. I, myself, think people can change.
There’s so many different arguments and opinions

The goal of prison should be to rehabilitate because people change and when they change they deserve the opportunity to do better in the future.

Could you be more specific in this? What point are you trying to drive at? Or are you after a perfectly balanced argue, as this arguement can go wherever you so wish depending on your personal view.

You could also talk about how punishing people may cause them to offend again as they won’t change or see the wrong in what they have done

Both.
Without punishment there would be no deterrence
Without reform there would be no end of crime.

Look in to restorative justice.
What leads people to commit crimes--can this be changed?
What is a bad person?
What is antisocial personality disorder--can inderviduals with it be ever rehabilitated?
What does rehabilitation look like- is it mealy an abstance from crime?
