Hi ive got an invitation to interview for PPE at Univ. and ive heard a lot about the socail life that people tend to lead while staying for interview.
My question is are the pubs/clubs really strict on ID? im still 17 but i really want this experience.
Thanks for any help

I don't know about the pubs but I think the clubs will all be fairly strict.

social life at interview?

i must be boring.. i just had a test & interviews. then went shopping.. did reading, went to the college bar a few times & the subject party at the end. it was hardly wild..

anyway, i've never, nor has anyone i've seen been asked for proof of age ID in oxford for pubs/clubs - proof of student status/college etc for certain nights, yes.

but presumably that's because its a university town!

during interview periods though.. i doubt the normal student nights will be running + everywhere will know most oxford undergrads will have gone, so some places may be strict i guess. though you see plenty of underage looking (probably locals) on Friday & Saturday nights, so i guess some places don't care..!

The university-orientated pubs are not generally that strict at all on ID as they will assume anyone who looks the part is a student (and are thus popular with sixth-formers). However they will probably be aware that it is interview time and might thus become a little stricter....

Clubs are always pretty strict, and TBH it probably isn't a good idea going out in such a big way if you have interviews.

at interviews last year I remember them being pretty strict and demanding ID off everyone. I don't know about out of term time, but a lot of places won't let you in unless you have a Bod card (Zoo organised nights etc)

I've only ever been IDed here three times- once at The Bridge, once in a restaurant and once at the Jericho. It's probably worth a try but don't lay your hopes on it.

During the open days in the summer, although quite clearly very few undergrads were there, four of us (not by any means particulary old looking 17 year olds) managed to get served without a problem in the pubs around ChCh - everyone was v. friendly and presumably thought us students.

But, as someone else said - its not the ideal time to party - how about waiting a few weeks for new year?

I'm in sixth form near Oxford (and am also applying), and the pubs around here are varying in terms of ID - sometimes you get asked sometimes you don't, but they're not exactly anything special ;p if i were you i'd wait, as someone said above. i might go and have a drink or two with friends during the interview process, but no big partying nights - 'twould be silly indeed

When I had my interviews we were advised by undergrads not to even bother trying to go out as most of the clubs/pubs/bars know exactly when all the interview canditates arrive and purposely ID everyone. Whilst I was at interview, some of the undergrads went out (along with interview canditates who were 18) and all of them got ID'd even though some were 21. The people ID-ing them said that because of interviews they had a policy of ID-ing everyone (a similar thing happened in my home town on results day and to make matters worse they only accepted driver's licences - which they scanned to check were real - and passports).

By all means try, but:

1) Remember you're there for interviews rather than the social aspect (although you'll probably make some great friends and enjoy yourself despite the interviews!!)
2) You are likely to be ID'd and most places won't accept gym memberships/NUS student cards

if anyone's at oriel go to the Bear.

however drinking during interviews is not recommended.

Reply 13

i guess they would know it interview time and the bulk of people wont be 18 yet

Reply 14

We went to two clubs this year and had no problems with ID so I don't think they all are particularly strict.

Reply 15

Apparently the police were touring the bars last night chucking underage people out...

lol!

having lived near ox and going to school there.. id say the clubs (and everyone else) really couldn't care less about the interviewees..

ID is generaly about weather or not they like you.. always been like that in ox.. if you want to get served.. go before the bouncers appear and you will be fine... up for clubbing? like rock music? go to the cellar.. its fun but ive always enjoyed the atmosphear at the turl.

and as far as going out goes, do it!! my buddy who got in to Ox last year for maths is now best friends with the people she met at interview.. live a little.. ultimatly its all show and its the written tests that count

As far as i can tell they don't interview at any time other than interview time. I've never been IDed in the last three years, until last friday.

And if you're a member of Imsoc you can DJ there on Sunday evening

I met a girl who's here for interview and her and some other potential medics went for a pretty hardcore night out, going to all these places I've never even heard of

Yeah but they're medics! It's probably part of the admissions process for them ...
