I hope that petition thing you plan on doing is relatively successful. Although I'm a total newbie to some of that gym equipment I was certainly intending on trying it at Leicester and will be stuck doing cardio and mediocre weight training I guess :s-smilie:!

Tell me about it, i was talking to a third year in the rugby team about it, he came up with an amazing conclusion on the gym;

"Having to train with a smith machine is like having sex with a matress" :s-smilie:

Needless to say, he too resented the lack of a bench press, as do many, but i guess some gym is better than no gym.

You can pick up decent benches with a bar and weights for less that 150 quid.

Perhaps we can all chip in and get one for the gym ourselves?

All they have to do is bring heavier dumbells above 25Kg, for those that really want to bodybuild properly, that way they can do the dumbell presses, rows and not depend on the smith machine but it really is poor especially for those that can lift more than the maximum dumbell available..I've never been to greenhouse 2 (The one at campus) but are there actually any dumbells there? there's less equipment than the one at oadby right?

I'm actually thinking on joining Cannons, but I hear the membership is really expensive, is this true? and how much is it per year or month?

Greenhouse 2 has 22kg dumbells. Cannons has limited space for students, but if you sign up early its £99 for 3 months. However if you go on their website and take a virtual tour of the weights room...suprise suprise...no bench press

I know there is a fitness first 6 miles from oadby (google earthed it as my 3 month period runs out whilst im there) There pritty good, £35 a month without student discount (which is like 10% i think) and from my local one (peterborough) there are plenty of weight training facilities, i would imagine that the Leicester one should be very similar.
So what about free weights to put on the smith machine? How many are there and how big are they? For example could i squat 180kg using the smith?

I think theres about 140-150KG of weights altogether to put on the smith.

Just 22kg?! how am i suppose to get any bigger with those lol! they do have barbells to put weight on them to do barbell curls and rows right? and a bench to lie on too? at greenhouse 2 (campus one)?

As for cannons thats quite expensive, they really should make it cheaper for students, and yea i went on the virtual tour and didn't see any bench, but I'm sure they have a nice selection of dumbells to replace that I guess? And what do you mean by limited space..as in you cant use the pool nor steaming rooms but you can use everything in the weights room?

Thanks!

Theres ready made fixed 5ft barbells in greenhouse 1 in Oadby from 10kg to 45kg. In greenhouse 2 they go from 10kg to 35 kg. The weight discs only go on the smith machine. There are adjustable benches at both gyms.

At cannons the 'limited space' means the 3 months for £99 deal is limited, so most students who want this will apply early. And that deal will only cover off peak hours, you won't be able to use it during peak hours. I don't know whether this covers the pool sauna etc though, give them a ring and pester them like i did

cool, I will thanks for the info...I doubt I'd be joining greenhouse this year though theres just not enough weight to get any bigger, both dumbells and barbells..so I guess my other option would be to join cannons and i shall see about that..lol..what you planning on doing Usman?

Joining a gym called S and S in Evington. £20 a month but i go 6 times a week so it's worth it i figure.
I'd rather go for the £55 a year one. I'm currently on a £25 a month contract and I have not been as motivated as I thought (5 days a week, like that was gonna happen) so I think I might join the uni one.

Oh right! thing is Evington is quite far away from the Uni and where Im going to live this year. Do you know if there's a good gym near the Uni..I've heard of FitnessFirst is this any good?

This gym discussion is depressing me because I'm really not sure where I'm going to have to go to start more heavyweight training at a reasonable price and location :s-smilie:
how far is the gym from mary gee

You're about halfway between the one in Oadby and the one on the university campus. A mile/mile and a half to either.
hmmm which one is better?

You can try both, but I think the one at Oadby is bigger.
