My late godmother had a spell of sending me birthday cards with pictures by James Tissot so, whilst some people will find the moralistic and allegorical kind of paintings too chocolate-boxy, I liked the almost photographic style and it got me interested in Leighton and Alma-Tadema, too. There is some clever story-telling and symbolism if you look deeper, as well as the technique; same with the Pre-Raphaelites.
A few years ago I saw an exhibition of Alma-Tadema at Leighton House, which was the perfect venue for it. The interior of the building itself is stunning; have you visited?
