where is strathyclude ? never heard of it

The University of Strathclyde is, somewhat unsurprisingly, in Strathclyde which is (again, somewhat unsurprisingly) in Scotland. I'd rather have hoped you might have noticed it; two and a half million people live there after all.

I don't actually. I guess I am quite ignorant of Scotland (living in London) :p:

guys woooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooow chill out yarrrrrrrrrrrr

for all those wondering my sixth year subject choices are as follows

H English
H Mathematics
H Religious Moral & Philosophical Studies

i got an A in Intermediate 2 English and Maths so hopefully be able to get the same at Higher and i think i will find RMPS rather interesting so i will work my ass off for all these subjects

To clarify: Higher Music - B
Higher Business Studies - C (appealing for a B as i got 68% in the preliminary exam) Maybe a B
Higher Computing - C ( This is a hard subject thanks for the re-enforcement "Pamelaa")

to get in to strathclyde after one sitting AABB OR ABBBC
therefore i would need 2 A's at higher to better the entrance requirements but i was wondering why the woman at the university wanted me to do 4 highers surely 3 is enough as they are as above..

thanks again pamelaa ignore that idiot

Most universities in Scotland ask for four Highers as a base. You can get away with three if, for example, you are applying for a science and you have three good science grades.

Reply 24

yeah i just thot that having seven highers at the end of 6th year was alot

Reply 25

Not really. Unless you are wanting to do some Advanced Highers then most people will have seven or more.

Reply 26

Im not being harsh but if you look at the requirements and then your grades you are a long way off the requirements for the course so i wouldnt say the university is harsh

Reply 27

bbc isnt a long way off abbbc

Reply 28

Well, it is. They ask for five Highers and you have three. This year you will need to get As and Bs to really stand a chance.

after one sitting is the key term here. If you get the grades over 2 years they're going to want even more from you.

Strathclyde isn't really a region anymore it's been split into different areas so i could understand if someone was confused.

I have 9 highers..
People usually have more than 7 highers unless they took advanced highers in 6th year.

Reply 33

9 highers is rediculous , u dont need that many

You do need more than BCC though.
My friend receieved 4 Highers in his 5th year and the conditions of his offer for this year were BBCC.

You'll just need to work hard.

Reply 35

yeah but im doing H eng H maths and H rmps i thot they could offer a conditional of like AAB or something but they didnt:frown:

ps one of my C's will hopefully become a B

I know that, but i did rubbish in my 1st set of highers in 5th year, so i had to do more in 6th year to make up for my results in 5th year, so i could get into uni.

So seeing as you haven't met the entry requirements in your 5th year, like me, you will need to do more highers and achieve better grades the second time round.

In fact, you pretty much got the same results as me in 5th year (except i got 2 more C's) so just work harder in 6th year, and youl be fine

Yeah, most Uni's wont accept you unless you have atleast 4 Highers, My friend wanted to do Religon at Stirling and had an A in RE, an A in English and a B in Maths but the rest of her grades were int 2 so she didn't get accepted (And this was through clearing... so they really don't like accepting you without 4 highers). I got 6 Highers, An AH and a group progression award (Sort of between Higher and Int 2) in Digital Design. But I got all Unconditionals in my 5th year.

PS - Computing is an academical subject and pretty hard, It's not like its home ecconomics you don't just play on the computer for an hour, Its very similar to maths.

There's always Paisley (Sorry, UWS...)

Or Napier in Edinburgh, and clearing.

But if you've set your heart on going to Strathclyde I think you're going to have to follow the advice you got and achieve those other highers.

You could go back for 6th year and work a bit harder? Taking an AH would probably help too.

Or...if you feel you have "extenuating circumstances" you could try and appeal your rejection.

Why not just go back to school for another year? When you apply again next year you can write a better personal statement and achieve better exam results; that should do the trick.

Good luck

That's only if it's Computing Science (i.e. maths/logic) surely? Some computing degrees aren't quite so hard (e.g. programming, java, web design etc)
