The short term memory is the second stage of the multi-store memory model proposed by the Atkinson-Shiffrin. The duration of the STM seems to be between 15 and 30 seconds, and has a capacity of 5 to 9 items.

There are three key aspects of the short term memory.
- Limited capacity - only about 7 items can be stored at any one time.
- Limited duration - storage is very fragile and information can be lost with distraction of passage of time.
- Encoding - primarily acoustic, even translating visual information into sounds.

You could then go on to talk about the tests that were done to see how much information people could store in the short term memory at one time, as well as how it was found that there was a stage between the sensory register and the long term memory. The functions of the short term memory are also interesting to discuss in an essay.

Hope this helped
