PSJ problem solving journal, Ukmt

Hello everybody.

I was just wondering if anybody is familiar with the problem solving journals set by tony Gardiner lecturer of Mathematics at Birmingham university. The questions he proposes are similar to the ukmt challenges (but to a greater degree of difficulty).

This thread is open to discussion now, so anything regarding psj, ukmt or tony gardiner and birmingham university even. :smile:

Yeah, it is widely underappreciated. I've had all the correct sloutions once for the junior e and also for the intermediate e, i just never got round to sending the solutions and getting my name in. Don't you need to get at least most of the questions right for your name to be included? :confused:

I sent in answers for the senior-E and some of the senior-H for this last one. They're probably wrong but it was fun to attempt. I was given it for years but could never be bothered, but I've actually got good maths teachers now (due to choosing double maths A Level) and I rather enjoyed doing it and I'm enjoying maths more in general. It's great to be given interesting problems, the sort that linger for a while, then you get the answer completely unexpectedly. I love that about maths. They should definitely make it much more widely available. Great fun.

where do you get the PSJ from?

I'm just given mine by my teacher. It doesn't have a website as far as I can make out, but it's run by someone from the University of Birmingham. The email address given is

I'd try that, but I've got a feeling its only done through schools, so you might have to get your head of maths to email. I hope that was of some use to you.
