Ooh, a doubly-necromanced thread.

Gosh I am finding it so hard to fill in the additional personal statement bit. The way that Land Economy works by combining three disciplines together perfectly makes it so hard to explain how it fascinates me.. surely the reason is the same for everyone! Argh is it really necessary to fill that bit in? I've heard that it's especially catered for subjects like Land Eco as it's such a unique course! :frown:

how is everyone doing with their interview preparation? I'm reading books related to econ and politics (which is totally irrelevant to LE) because I mentioned I'm interested in the applied side of economics and I heard that since LE is really inter-disciplinary, interviewers will construct interview questions based on my interests that I stated in my personal statement. I don't know anything about geography and law so it really concerns me...
If you guys are all a little confused about what to put in your PS then don't worry. The LE Dept knows that you'll be applying for completely different things elsewhere. If you want to know exactly what papers you'll have the chance to do, here's a list (you may have this already, I don't know).

For the record, I'm a 3rd year Land Economist at Pembroke, and I got aaab/AAA (I re-sat the b and got an a eventually).

The Papers:

Paper 1: Economics
Paper 2: Public law
Paper 3: Accounting and data evaluation
Paper 4: Land, environment and structural change
Paper 5: Environmental economics, law and policy
Paper 6: Fundamentals of finance and investment
Paper 7: Regional economics
Paper 8: Law of real property: principles, policy and economic implications
Paper 9: Private law
Paper 10: The built environment
Paper 11: Land and Urban Economics
Paper 12: Law and Economics
Paper 13: Landlord and tenant law
Paper 14: Planning law and policy
Paper 15: Advanced techniques in finance and investment for real estate
Paper 16: Agriculture, forestry and rural development
Paper 17: Land policy and development economics

First year you do 1-4, then you choose five papers in 2nd year, then four more and a dissertation in 3rd year. Hope that gives a flavour.

Actually you'll find politics is hugely related to LE. First year you do constitutional and administrative law as well as welfare economics in the economics paper. Then lots of the optional papers involve policy, be it central and local planning policy (Paper 14) , EU agricultural policy (P16), international environmental policy (P5), region disparities (P7) or housing policy (P11). Land Economy is very wrapped up in government and politics. I would almost say too much!

Good job dude!

I recieved a letter from Pembroke this morning, with a request for me to submit two essay by Nov. 14th - but it doesn't say what the essays have to be on. I suppose Economics/Geography related ones would be more appropriate, but am I right in thinking there's nothing stopping me submitting an English Lit essay along with an Economics one? What sort did you send off?

Also, does this mean I'm definately in for an interview? :p:
Yeah, I think you can send in any essays you want. I sent in a geography one which I'd already written together with an economics one I wrote specially about a subject I was interested in (pollution permits and their relation to EU milk quotas! I don't know why...). I had my economics one marked seperately by my economics teacher. Remember; the crucial thing you want to show is your love for, and engagement with, the subject that you are applying for. But if your Eng Lit essay shows excellent critical analysis and essay writing skills then go for it above a mediocre geography essay.

Thank you for your advice. I hope to apply for 2010 entry but I really have no ideas about what to submit. Do these papers need to be marked by my teachers and can I possibly decide a coherent topic for LE to write about or it must follow the syllabi somehow
I'll move this to the land economy thread - you are more likely to get helpful responses.

Yes, I think they do need to be marked, but check this. If you can decide on a topic you are interested in then surely it's much better to do that than an essay you were told to do. I did mine on the economic justification for pollution control, and its similarities with EU milk quotas. (Sorry if that doesn't sound fascinating!)

Has anybody recieved a date for an interview yet? What's everyone doing at the moment for preparation?
Reply 191
Also - those of you sending essays, would it be OK to send off one for economics and one for english literature? Since there's a major law element in the course, english lit should be quite appropriate too...right?

I have a letter for an interview for the 25th, you should have either got a letter inviting you to an interview or rejecting you

Which college did you apply to?

I've been asked to submit essays but the final date isn't until Friday for Pembroke, so I'm thinking interview + rejections will come next week...??! I hope so at least!
