Thanks so much for offering to help!

Just wondering what/how to prepare if i was lucky enough to get an intervew at Clare? I have a background in economics but none in law/ geography,

What have you studied so far? :colondollar: Intrigued!

Hey there, no problem!

Just read over the stuff you've studied in economics, make sure you understand it and know how to apply it. I wouldn't worry about the law (keep up to date with the news though), and A-Level/IB geography is mostly common sense (in my experience) so you should be fine...

You're a bit unlucky going to Clare, you'll probably be interviewed by the DoS which is also head of the entire Land Ec department... no way to sugarcoat it I'm afraid :/

We're over 1/3 of the way through the econ book (after 4 lectures) so it's quite intensive... it's a significantly different approach from what I'm used to in econ, i.e. you really analyze and go deep into how demand and consumer tastes actually work, rather than just drawing a line and saying what it is.

In law we've mainly been talking about the Constitution in a lot of depth, they expect you to memorize a lot of the Acts/statutes etc.

Paper 3 is tough... statistics is fine but the real estate is tough (and interesting), really going deep into valuations of property etc.

And paper 4 we've mainly been revising A-level geography, though looking at it in a different way.

That all sounds really interesting and great

Sorry if i'm being naive, but why is it bad if i'm interviewed by the DoS of Clare?
What subjects did you take at Alevel?

It's not necessarily bad, just that he may have higher expectations than another, less experienced DoS. It could be a good thing - depends how well you perform under pressure

I took the IB. I did HL Economics, Geography, English Literature, SL Swedish Language, Maths Studies and Biology.

Ah right, i see the logic there now! I didn't think about that when i picked to apply to Clare, i had just heard good things about it haah!

I'm so jealous; i would love to have done the IB. Do you think i'm at a disadvantage having not done geography?

Thanks again

Haha, I'm sure it'll be alright

The IB has its ups and downs... in hindsight, I'm glad I did it

That really depends, what are your A-Levels?

My a-levels are Economics, Maths, History. I'm doing an EPQ in economics, and further maths AS this year and i did Drama AS last year.

How are the other people on the course doing? Is everyone similar seeing as it's such a small department?

Aha. History would actually have been useful for the essay I'm doing right now  I think you'll be fine without the geography. If it's a disadvantage, it'll be minor. As long as you've argued why you chose the course in the SAQ (and to some extent in the Personal Statement, depending on what else you applied for), you should be fine

Most people seem to be doing fine, and yeah most people are finding accounting most difficult as well. You really get to know a lot of people very quickly - I probably know 75% of people (approximately 50-55 of us in total) by name, and all of them by sight.

Thanks again for all the information- hopefully i will at least get an interview  :colondollar:

Hey guys,

I'm a first year Land Economist at Robinson. If you or anyone else has got any questions about Land Economy, Cambridge, Robinson, IB/A-Levels for Land Economy, etc. etc., feel free to quote me and I'll do my best to answer. I know I found it quite annoying that no one really knew anything about the course when I was applying last year so hopefully I can help change that!

(I know this may have been more useful before the application deadline, but it only occurred to me now).

No way. I am applying for Land Economy at Robinson!

Did you write an additional personal statement for your saq? I was told to do that, but I can't think of anything which I haven't already mentioned in my personal statement...
And also, how should I prepare for the interview at Robinson?

My only concern is, I don't do economics at college and I am more attracted to the law aspect of it (planning etc.). Most people seem to pick Land Economy with a good foundation of economic knowledge. :frown:

Thank you! You're a lifesaver.

Whoa there! Hello

I did write an additional personal statement, yes. My UCAS personal statement was very business/economics-oriented, so I tried to bring in some of the other aspects of the course into the SAQ one. I don't know what else you've applied for, but maybe that's something you could consider? I doubt you've covered all the aspects of the course in your UCAS one.

I was actually pooled to Robinson, but I know my DoS (the person which will interview you) quite well now  You can PM me if you want more specifics, but she's really nice and friendly - a lot better than some of the other DoS's and lecturers... she teaches Planning, Policy and Practice (in year 3) so that should be an awesome match!

About 50% of Land Ecs go into finance, and I'd say 75% have done economics previously. Doesn't necessarily have to be a disadvantage - what are your A-Levels/IB subjects/other?

Robinson is awesome by the way, everyone is really friendly and laid-back.

Any other questions, feel free to ask!

Hello everyone,
I'm applying to Newnham.
Ive just sent my SAQ, I hope I will at least get an interview, but I am still afraid that my PS was too law-oriented. I haven't studied economics at school (my HL hist, geo, eng) but I wrote in the SAQ about self-taught economics using the AS level book, I hope it will be enough.

Its great to keep in touch with other applicants, fingers crossed for all of you/us!

I'm in the same situation. My personal statement is also law-orientated. And I don't do economics at college. But I guess Cambridge understands that Land Economy is a very unusual course and we must be able to apply everywhere else.

Should both be fine  don't worry about it, I was in a similar boat.
Could I possibly know you're subjects and predicted grades?

Hi Saelie,

I am also a LE applicant, have my interview on the 26th of Nov. at Trinity Hall. It has been so good reading your answers on LE, since it's so hard finding anyone who actually studies it. I'd have a couple of questions:

a) Any ideas how I revise for my interviews if I haven't learnt either law or economics so far? (not really options in Hungary...) Will this effect my application very badly?
b) I found some "sample interview questions" on google for LE, like "Is it more important to focus on poverty at home or abroad?" (link: https://sites.google.com/site/oxbridgeinterviewquestions/land-economy) are these of any help? Is it likely that I'll get asked something similar to these questions?

Thanks in advance,
M
