I got a place for this year... I read 'Freakonomics' and 'The Undercover Economist'.. the 'History of Economics' (so boring).... and part of 'British Government and Constitution' by Colin Turpin... also boring... but simply reading the Economist and keeping up to date with current affairs is probably the best preparation..

i hope that helps ...

I think I have seen the book 'Freakonomics' in my school library. thank you! npatel, so which college did you apply to?

One of my Land Economist friends said their interview was really Economics based and they were just quizzed in-depth on their a-level Economics course and wider reading. I guess it depends on college choice, though, and whatever the DoS specialises in.

I applied to Gonville & Caius..... no real reason.. it just seemed nice...

You should try and focus on whatever interests you... if the economics side of land economy is what interests you then you may wish to focus on that... alternatively you could try to cover all three disciplines ...
my personal statement was focused on economics and so at the start of the interview i told the guy that it was what I was mainly interested in and so the questions were more geared towards that..... hope that helps as well
soooo... basically.. im saying focus on what you are good at and any further reading that you do is going to benefit you..

I read the Undercover Economist and Freakenomics - I think most people seem to! I also read the Economist every week for a couple of months leading up to my interview. One of my supervisor's told me that everyone says on their personal statement that they read the Economist! I also tired to read a newspaper most days to keep up to date with current affairs.

To be honest I read alot and in the end it didn't really help me much in my interview. I saw something on the news the week previously which helped me so I would just advise knowing what is going on in the world.

In my subject specific interview I was asked some Economics questions as I did alevel Economics and then I was asked a legal scenario question which you did not need to have any specific knowledge of law of to answer. They are not going to expect you to have a knowledge of law if you have never studied it before.

Hi, I was just wondering how hard is it to get into Land Economy? What are an average set of GCSEs? And is Economics A Level essential?

A-Level Economics is not essential, but preferable. Some colleges are more fussy than others; read the website. The average GCSE grades are probably in-line with the Cambridge average (6A*). I know a couple of Land Economists very well, one got 6A*/4A at GCSE and the other got 7A*/1A/1B.

In terms of competition, it's no less competitive than most subjects at Cambridge, with applicants : offers ratios of around 1:4 or 1:5.

Hey folks, just wanted to open a lil' thread about prospective Land Economy applicants (2008).

Who's considering it? What AS-grades did you get? Which college are you appling to? How to write a good enough PS?

Just some things to ponder I guess.

Cheers

here~ i'm international and currently doing IB. I'm lost in PS too..

Hey, I applied for Land Economy last year and received an offer.

With the Personal Statement the University gave the impression that because Land Economy is such a rare subject and offered at few other universities, they would understand if your statement isn't fully focused on LE.

But, in my PS I wrote about my interest in land and resource management issues and the economic development of China. I guess in the case of the latter they may be getting a little sick of it being mentioned in personal statements as I imagine many people will have done so recently. Perhaps, showing interest in something less obvious would be better.

Hopefully, that will help you. Most importantly though I would say to just be honest about why you find the course appealing and demonstrate it by mentioning your wider reading and experiences.

Thanks Aj@y

May I ask, what AS + GCSE grades did you get? And did you take maths? (I know it's not necessary but I'm curious lol)

btw - did you accept the offer?

I've finally decided to stick with land economy after switching from Geography and History and back again a hundred times.
I think this is the course that completes my idea of the perfect course. :woo:
And after looking all over, there is no other thread for prospective undergrads like us. So here it is:

I'm starting to work on my personal statement but I'm not quite sure yet. I need some more information about the course and the department website doesnt really have much. Any land economy students here for help?

Also when you start specializing in year 2 can you take papers in law and economics throughout or there a required amount for the other years too?

Which colleges are you applying to?

Hi, I'm applying to Downing. I haven't started my personal statement cuz I'm too afraid to accidentally ruin everything. How are you going to prepare for the interview? I'm trying to get as much knowledge as possible in economics but I'm not sure whether i'm doing the right thing as i'm applying for Land Economy, not economics. What are your A-level subjects?
