Failed First Year

Ok so i failed my first year engineering course. I know why i failed.. i didn't work, Simple as. I know i can do the work because i managed to pass most of the January exams with little work what so ever - however it went down hill from there.

I was given the order to retake 7 modules which is literally impossible in this kind of degree when you have done no work all year, so i have no hope of getting anywhere near the pass mark. I'm going back up to Manchester next week anyway and i'm going to try and speak to the head of department and ask to retake the first year.

I'm really really worried now, i've completely messed up and if i ask to retake the first year they will just turn around and say "well you didn't turn up for half of your lectures, why should we waste our time with you again.."

It wasn't a great first year i had a lot going on in my head etc but they won't take that as a "mitigating circumstance" now will they! Erg. Before you ask, yes i do love my course and have a good interest in it. Doing little work last year was due to my lifestyle, but getting full time work this summer and having a big think about what went wrong has changed me.. a lot.

Any stories of people managing to retake there first year? I'm so scared they will just tell me to p*** off.

I know about 3 people redid first year on my course, so yes it's prefectly possible. Tbh I'm surprised they haven't told you to do that as opposed to retaking seven modules.

From a personal view though, if I failed a year I'd question whether it's REALLY the course for me. Can you see yourself actually doing the work next year?

The trouble is the mechanical engineering dept at manchester uni is strict to say the least..

I kno what you mean about 'is it the right course' and 'will i do the work' , i've asked myself that enough in the last 6 weeks. Failing the first year in such a bad way is such a horrible feeling - i WILL not let it happen again. I think i would have failed any course to be honest though, like i said, it was my lifestyle (i was like it in 6th Form for two years and i couldn't change my habits in time i guess).

Okay well just explain to them. All they can do is say no then you can assess your chances from there. I can't imagine they'd say no, but if they're that strict you'll have to decide what to do next!

Just explain you struggled, but you know where you went wrong about how to stop it happening again. Then next year don't let it happen again!

It may help if you go to them and be really mature and tell them you know you've messed up, but you know you have more in you, and you really want this, and you do enjoy your course, they will probably be impressed that you are taking an adult approach to the situation

That is one reason why I'm going to work pretty hard at uni, as I would hate the thought of throwing away 3/6 grand. As at the end of the day its your money.

I'm sorry to hear you failed your 1st year. This quite scares me cos one of my mater failed his 1st year of mechanical engineering at uni then decided to do another course after. I myself would be planning on studying engineering soon and failure is really not an option for me. I hope to really do well. My advise to you is to get yourself together and move on. All the best dude. Goodluck

Fair play, engineering FTW.

I'm actually really surprised they actually let you have the option to resit SEVEN failed modules! I thought they might've just said "resit the year or bugger off". To be honest I think you've definitely got chance to resit the year, especially if they have enough "faith" to think you might actually want to resit seven. Haha but don't let it stress you out too much... for the record I failed 4. :p: But that was with a degree where it's pretty do-able.. I understand Engineering is a major head*****.

Any updates? In a vividly similar situation myself.
