Kicked out of a pub for using a citizencard as an ID?

Alright, so tonight I went out to celebrate my A-level exam results at a local pub with some friends. I'm 19 years old btw.

All was going pretty good, I got served one drink by one bartender without being ID'd, and then came back for another drink with someone else to serve me. The only ID I had on me was a citizen card (photo ID card), this one:

http://www.citizencard.com/

Anyway he told me it wasn't valid ID as it wasn't a driver's licence or passport, and that I'd have to leave the entire pub straight away. I told him that I've used that ID freely in other pubs and I use it in supermarkets to buy alcohol, so it should be valid.

So I'm just wondering, what are the purpose of these cards if I can't use them to buy age-restricted items? I thought that was the purpose of them or am I mistaken?

Ughh, way to ruin my celebration night too, so annoyed :P

CitizenCard FAQ #10

My card has been refused, what can I do?

If your card has been refused you may inform PASS directly http://www.pass-scheme.org.uk and complete a refusal letter. Alternatively you may inform us at [email protected] and we will investigate the matter.

I know.

The guy told me I was banned from the pub too and not allowed to return too, wtf.

From the FAQ:

Is CitizenCard widely-recognised?

Most shops, pubs, clubs, airlines (domestic flights) and other organisations recognise CitizenCard as valid photo-ID or proof-of-age. As a scheme audited by the Trading Standards Institute CitizenCard was the first scheme to carry PASS (Proof of Age Standards Scheme) accreditation, supported by the Home Office.

"Most" being the key word here. Sure, the barman was out of order refusing to accept it as a valid form of ID, but legally, he hasn't done anything wrong.

Next time, take a passport or driving licence with you as backup in case it isn't accepted... I know its a pain, but you'll always get someone who'll argue the toss!

You should have asked to see the manager.

PASS is governed by the same legislation/protocol as passports and driving licenses: that's the whole point of the PASS system.

The question begs...even if you don't drive - where was your driving license?

Yeah, I don't have a driver's licence and it's a pain carrying around my passport as it doesn't fit in a wallet. Oh well.

Yeahhh... I know pubs that only accept passports and drivers licenses (some won't even accept provisionals - wtf??!) Everywhere I've been has said on the bar/wall what they accept/don't.

Gutting though. What did you do instead? Just switch pubs I hope?

Get a provisional license, is about the only advise.
Just wait til PASS contact them, and perhaps contact the manager? Seems out of order to ban you.

Yep, we went to another pub but it was annoying having to walk to find another one. They accepted my ID there though, so it could've been worse.

Most places only accept drivers license/passport.

practically every pub in swindon will only take drivers licence/passport...

just get a provisional, so much hassle saved!

Which while we're on the topic is ludicrous. It doesn't suit everyone to drive at uni, so if you didn't do it during sixth form, you're screwed. Unless you feel confident enough to take your passport out, lose it, and pay £80 for another. Provisionals aren't cheap either, £40?

http://www.brc.org.uk/pass/downloads/Card%20Refusal%20Form.doc is the Card Refusal Form, PASS will investigate  (email it to [email protected])

He was the manager, sadly.

To the people telling me to get a provisional - yeah I'm on it, I had one but I lost it, arghh. I'm going to try the learning to drive thing again once I move to Uni though (I epic failed and gave up the first time).

Was it brewery run, or a little local? You could write to them, because it's a pain to be banned, over something idiotic.

I'm pretty sure it was brewery run. I don't think I'll bother, as once I move to Uni I'm not coming back to this part of the UK as I have to turn in my room in my houseshare.

Yeah, it takes the piss. Provisionals have gone up to 50 quid now, and passports are around 90 quid to get made, pretty steep prices for a night out on the town. They really should introduce some other kind of formal ID.
