i've literally been having the same thought process about doctor vs midwife. its really difficult but i realised that really then maternity and womens health care is the only area of medicine im particularly interested in, and i like the way you are able to spend more time with individual patients as a midwife...
also the training looks way more interesting with 50% on placement.
as far as your parents go, they may not be happy at first but at the end of the day, you need to do a job that you love, especially when it is something as stressful and life consuming as medicine or midwifery.
good luck, and just tell them what you think (although i appreciate thats not always easy, it will be worth it in the long run)

heyy thanks so much for replying and it’s nice to know that someone can relate.i feel like I’m pulling towards the midwife side I’m in yr12 so u have to make a choice soon
Well if you're prepared to put in the immense study over something like 15 years to reach the top and become an established consultant doctor and have the ability and passion then choose Medicine. Midwifery is a highly respectable job too but not in the same league study, money or prestige wise as medicine to be honest.

ive been thinking about this and i also think that this is one of the things putting me off medicine :
there is so much expectation and everyone goes on about how 'respectable' it is and how its in 'another league'... I just want to care for people in the best way that I can, thats what drew me to healthcare in the first place, and i feel that this would be difficult if I felt there was an expectation for me to maintain that exterior. I think with midwifery there is simply an expectation to be kind and competent to help families through the most amazing, vulnerable and scary time of their life. I find that just as 'respectable'

Hi there,

Both of these careers are highly respected and we need midwives just as much as we need doctors. Both have very different training paths which will take different lengths of time, so maybe weighing up the pros and cons of both will help you to make a decision that is right for you.

Also please do think about what is going to make you happiest in the long term and make you feel most fulfilled in your career.

There really is no right or wrong answer here, including your parents in the research you're doing may also help with your decision making.

Good luck - Sophie
