The people I know at uni have been and they did have time with it. The best places to work would probably at your university as they are more lenient during exam times

Considering we are in a recession and many people are going to be out of work I doubt there will be much demand for students working part time.

I worked part-time during both my undergraduate degree and my MA year, and I still do some part-time work (like this!) for Keele during my PhD, alongside teaching and research commitments.

During my undergraduate, I found waitressing worked really well for me as most of my shifts were in the evening so I could concentrate on my studies during the day. I also had a retail job but found that to be less flexible around my uni work. During my MA year, I worked weekends for my former full-time employers, and also provided them with some holiday and sick leave cover as required.

As PetitePanda says, there may be opportunities to work through your university. The bars and restaurants on campus at Keele often employ student staff and we also have a scheme called Student Ambassadors that pays students for providing representation and assistance at Open Days, Offer Holder events and outreach programmes, as well as on forums like TSR and UniBuddy.

As PetitePanda says, university employers are usually understanding about exams, deadlines etc so it is definitely worth looking out for roles on campus. Universities are often also really keen to have mature student voices represented on Ambassador schemes.

HI paulaxx8

I am a current PhD student at Hull (also completed both my undergrad and masters there too)

I have had a part-time job since my second year.
As mentioned by the Keele University rep, we also have opportunities to be a student ambassador, which is a paid opportunity to help with campus events which get advertised during our recruitment period in the welcome week. Some students decide to be an ambassador for their department whereas others directly represent the university
Our student's union is also another place where many students get jobs. Whether this is working in our on-campus shop or in the bar/food outlets.
Some of the pubs and local restaurants near the university also recruit students as well as shops in the town centre.

Follow the Hull uni union Facebook page as they often post on there about any employment opportunities within the union itself.

There are often job fairs as well which you can attend. so just keep an eye out for events such as this.

Hey, are there any particular qualifications/experience required in order to become a student ambassador?

I did work full time evenings during my first year at university. I also have young children, so struggled but managed to pass into second year.

At Keele, all we ask is that you are enthusiastic and responsible! Ambassadors are crucial in helping to represent the university to prospective students and visitors, so we look for students who can offer a smiling face and can carry out their duties with responsibility and dedication. Other than that it's open to all students (visa requirements permitted), with full training given and additional training for specialist roles.

You have to be a student at the University of Hull
And complete an application form which they email out to you if you register your interest with them at recruitment events.

If you have twitter I would suggest following @UniofHullSCLS as that will give you an insight into some of the opportunities of different events which we as student ambassadors have the opportunity to work. It is quite possible that they will post on their twitter when they are recruiting for ambassadors as well
